Rory POV

Harris has kindly given me a few days off to think.

But now I'm back and I'm on a mission.

Find out what she wasn't telling me and why.

Although I'm not sure we should have this conversation at the office so here I am at 8 pm, standing outside her house.

I lightly knocked on her front door.

It didn't take long for her to answer, a relieved sigh escaping her as she saw me, "Lorelai, what are you doing here?"

"I came to talk."

"Uh okay, sure, come in." She breathed, stepping aside so I could enter.

"Thank you."

I walked in, standing in her living room.

"You can sit down if you want."

"It's okay, I'm not staying long." I half-smiled.

She nodded, looking down at the floor.

"Why didn't you tell me? You would have told any other victim you had a potential suspect. So why not me?"

She sighed, "I don't know."

"How long have you known?" I questioned.

"About Daniels?"

I nodded.

"As soon as I found out I separated you both."

"How long?" I asked more sternly.

"Almost two months." She mumbled in shame.

"So when you asked me out the first time, you were looking into her?"

She still couldn't look at me, "Yes."

"Unbelievable." I laughed.

"I'm sorry Lorelai, you've gotta understand..."

"No." I interrupted, "You separated us both, made it so we never crossed paths and yet, still didn't tell me."

"I didn't want you to blow our investigation."

"Wow. Is that really what you think of me?" I scoffed.

"No. I just, you might have done something stupid." She mumbled sheepishly.

"You'd know all about that wouldn't you." I laughed, "So what, all that time we spent together, was that your idea of keeping an eye on me so I didn't, quote, do anything stupid?" I said, gesturing air quotes.

"I didn't mean it like that..."

"No, I know what you meant. You can't trust me."

"I do, it's just... I couldn't risk you confronting her about it."

Real smooth Harris.

"She was right, you really do only care about yourself." I sighed.

"You know that's not true Lorelai. Je suis tombé dur pour toi."

"Lemme guess, I'll never trust you."

"You know that's not what I said." She glared.

"Do I? Can I really trust that? You don't trust me so why should I trust you." I raised my eyebrow, "Hell, you're the one that lied to me."

"I'm so sorry. I don't know what to tell you." She frowned.

I waited for her to say literally anything else, but she just stayed silent.

"I guess that tells me all I need to hear." I sighed.

"What do you mean?" She panicked.

"If you can't trust me then we shouldn't be together."

She took a step towards me, reaching for my hand, "Wait no, I'm sorry, I'll trust you."

"You can't just trust someone overnight."

She blinked away the tears that threatened to fall, "I'm sorry, please don't do this."

"I can't be with someone who doesn't trust me."

"What can I do to fix this?" She choked up.

I took a deep breath, trying to hold it together, "For now, let's just leave us as it is. I need some space to think."

A tear ran down her cheek, "If that's what you want."

I smiled sadly, "If at any point you don't want to be in this with me anymore, tell me."

She squeezed my hand, "I want this. I want you. Whatever it takes to fix this, I'll do it."

"Okay."

She watched as I removed my hand from hers, letting it fall back to my side, "I should go."

She averted her gaze to the floor, "Okay."

I shoved my hands into my pockets awkwardly, "I'll see you at work."

"Yeah."

There was a few seconds of silence as I looked her over, making sure she was okay enough for me to go.

Once I confirmed she'd be okay I walked out the door, gently shutting it behind me.

Well shit, that might have been one of the worst things I've ever had to do.

I hope she'll be okay. Maybe it'll do her some good too.

I guess I've got some decisions to think over...
