I waved a bye to mom and dad and my grandparents, as well as little Toffy as I ran out of my house and towards my van. I was nearly late, but fortunately, the van didn't leave before I came. All thanks to Alan and Kale who had forced the driver to wait for me about five minutes. They waved to me from the second window, Alan with a glum look on his face which brightened a little upon seeing me while Kale had an impatient looking expression, along with a wide grin.
"Whew!" I sighed as I slumped down on the window seat saved for me by Alan just as it took off with a loud screech, "Thanks for that, guys!"
They both groaned in response. I raised an eyebrow questioningly and Alan sighed, "Did you really think we expected a 'thanks' from you, Rose?"
"Oh, sorry," I answered, "What were you expecting from me then? Do you want me to buy you some chocolates? I will -"
They groaned louder this time, and Kale facepalmed. Hey, he actually facepalmed! He never does that unless it's that serious. He's the type of guy to take everything in a funny way unless it's that serious.
"What, guys??" I groaned back, literally not understand what they meant. I just asked them what they expected from me for making the driver wait for me, since they didn't really accept my thank you. I don't see why they should have to be so irritated at me for that.
"Rose, I can't believe you can be book smart but otherwise, this street dumb!" Alan sighed in exasperation.
Kale gaped at me, pointed a finger at me and then looked at Alan, "She's book smart?!"Hmph. Why the hell can't people believe that I'm a topper? Just kidding, but honestly, I am pretty proud that I score well and is determined to do so as well. I'm not afraid of anyone calling me a nerd - which they don't, for your information, because they may be stupid, but not bullies - and I'll just call them back dumb. Easy.
Alan nodded, then turned to me again, "What we meant is that we didn't really expect a thanks from you because we're your damn friends, oof! In more depth, we meant that we didn't expect anything from you. It was just our duty."
I blinked for a few minutes, processing what Alan just told me, like a robot, then began nodding slowly as realisation crept up, "Ohh, now I get it!"
Maybe I really am street dumb.
"Sometimes, I wonder if you're actually very smart or very dumb," Alan sighed. For some unknown reason, he and Robby always calls me smart, smarter and smartest, compared to others. Alan, especially, calls me a genius and Sam's mother calls me a high IQ person who should go for IAS training. But I know for a fact, that I'm not nearly as smart as Paul or Riley are. But when they call me so, I start believing for myself that I am really smart, a genius maybe, and get an extra motivation, which might be just a psychological move they're using to make me motivated like always. I swear, I love them so much.
"I stand for the latter," Kale grinned. I grinned back, then replaced it abruptly with a pissed-off face, to which Alan chuckled and Kale pretended to be scared at.
Suddenly, Spencer and Amon came forward, nearly making me fall over because Spencer is just that clumsy. I rolled my eyes internally and moved further away from them like they were dirt, because they did the same to Sam whenever she went past and she didn't even do anything to them. I had to payback them sometimes for having ruined half of her life, even if it was in such small measures. They deserved worse, actually. I don't hate them, exactly, but I don't like them either.
"Yo Alan, is there a biology test today?" Spencer asked, pretending to be in shock. That's what he did to act cool - know all along that there is a test today and pretend to not know it, so that his fellow peers will think that he's such an awesome backbencher. I cringed, and so did Kale. Alan just shrugged, "Nah, it's just an oral test"
