POV: EL

My mother's death was not caused by an illness.
She died because of food poisoning.

My jaw dropped. I did not believe it.
My father had been lying to me for 13 years now.
Why..
Why.. Did he lie..

Before I could consolidate my thoughts together, a knock sounded at my door. I quickly tidied the box of medical bills and placed it in the box carefully without making a sound. Then, I closed the box and put it back to its original position.

"You can come in now." I said, with a sigh of relief.

And so, the door opened and it was my father.

"Hey, dinner is ready. You can eat now, your mother made chicken porridge with fried salmon." he said, leaning on the door. I nodded in reply and said, "Okay, I'll be there later." With my reply, he nodded with a smile and closed the door.

I relaxed my tensed muscles and began to write down what was written in the death certificate in my book.

The next day, I did not go to school. I came up with an excuse, saying that I felt unwell and I couldn't go to school. Instead, I went on to spy on my father.

He was the main clue to all of the happenings, my mother's death and the cupcakes. He must be hiding something from me.

During the afternoon, he wore a suit, which I know he would never wear it unless there's an event going on, and went off to somewhere. And this is when I realized, today was the day when my mother died.

He walled and I followed him without him noticing. Not for long, we came across a cemetery and he went in it.

Did he remember mother's death anniversary?
I wasn't so sure to jump into conclusions.

I followed him all the way and we stopped at mother's grave. Not even a second, tears blurred my vision. But, I had to stay strong, at least until when I find out the truth behind all of this.

I wiped off my tears and went for a closer look.
I could hear my father as clear as crystals.

"Marilyn, you deserve this. All I wanted was money and a great wife, yet you can't even fulfil my small wish. Now, Emily is taking great care of EL, much better than you. She even made her favourite cupcakes, mm.. I'm so glad Emily stole that recipe from you. Your mother's taste in cooking is so great, that I wish she was still alive. Oh, but she's just like you, Marilyn. She's like you, dead and stuck in a coffin."

And then, he left the flowers on the grave and left the cemetery.

I walked towards my mother's grave and stood there. Within seconds, I fell on my knees. I took the flower that my father placed and tore every petal.

With every petal plucked, every ounce of anger and hatred spread to my heart. My heart was no longer into pieces, it was glued with every hatred I have to my father, to my stepmother. And now it was whole, and I'm no longer afraid of anything now. I've been through the worst, been through the best. I have every moment in my memories of my mother. My real mother.

I'm ready to show them who's on the throne now.
