Practice on thursday was rough. Kou was practically running himself to death back and forth to give the team full water bottles and keep them hydrated, since it was the day before their practice match and they were working themselves extra hard.
Extra hard performance meant extra need of water. Usually Kou wouldn't bother to actually do what he was there to do in the first place, but he wanted to distract himself from what happened with his mom the night before. He needed to be as busy as possible. It was a habit of his that whenever he was stressed, he often used whatever random hobby or odd job he could get occupied with as a way to escape.
Because of everyone being so busy, practice flew by like nothing and before they knew it, it was already time to pack up. Some of the players wanted to keep practicing until late but Daichi argued that if they worked themselves too hard they wouldn't be physically stable enough to be at their best for tomorrow's match. They agreed that he had a good point, which he always did, and the team started heading home.
Kou thought that Daichi was a great captain.
It amazed him how he could be right about so many things and possess the ability to adapt to all kinds of unexpected situations. He admired how wise his upperclassman was, and how he always managed to carry himself with such composure. That was something he knew he could never do. He wasn't patient or poised at all.He was walking beside Nishinoya on their way home, talking about some new video game that just came out when a familiar cheery voice called out to them from behind.
"Noya–San! Minami–Kun!"
It was Hinata. He was walking in a group with Kageyama, Tsukki, and of course Yamaguchi. Kou quickly looked at Hinata so he wouldn't have that same weird reaction everytime he saw him.
"Noya, what the hell dude?!"
Tanaka magically appeared out of no where from behind the three and gave Nishinoya an offended look.
"What's up with you? You haven't hung out with me in like forever!"
He glanced over at Kou, looking at him as if the mere action were a diss. He's not going to lie, he was feeling slightly threatened by Minami as of lately. This weird kid popped out of no where, got himself on good terms with the upperclassman in the snap of a finger and was now hanging out with his bestfriend everyday. He actually did feel a little offended.
He crossed his arms and scoffed. "Don't tell me you're replacing me with this edgy brat."
Nishinoya jumped over to him and slapped him on the back of his head.
Tanaka flinched, moving backwards in defense. "OW! What the hell?! What'd you do that for?!"
He stood on his tiptoes to reach a little closer to Tanaka's height while slapping an around his neck, pulling him closer in an friendly embrace. "Aww, don't be so jealous buddy! I'm still your bestfriend. But Minami's one of us now, so you have to get along with him, like or not."
Noya smiled earnestly at Kou.
"Minami's my friend too."
For a second there, he could've sworn he felt his own heart stop again, but was lucky enough to successfully brush off the feeling and not let his startled reaction appear on the surface. He kept walking and didn't say anything.
