Alise had spent ages in that void on her own, they were beginning to lose hope, they didn't know how long they'd be stuck there, if there was a way out or if eventually their soul would just cease to exist if they wished hard enough.
And it was then, right when they least expected it, that an old friend showed up to the rescue...
Mark.
To say they were surprised would've been an understatement, but they were glad to finally have some company nonetheless... and he definitely kept them company: as soon as he'd shown up, the actor had been talking about a bunch of different things, mainly projects and scripts he'd worked on. He'd always been like that... a hurricane of ideas."So? What do you think? Did I have any interesting ideas? That's a trick question, cause all of them are! But- you know, which one has piqued your interest the most?" Mark asked, after what felt like hours of talking about all the concepts he had in his mind.
Alise was struggling to follow him already; it had been a long time since they'd last had a proper face-to-face talk, and she'd almost forgotten how talkative Mark could be when given the chance. They didn't mind, of course, it was nice to listen to his voice, but all that information was a little bit overwhelming, and she might've lost some parts of the discourse.
"Uhm... I don't know... l-like you said, they're all great ideas, it's hard to choose!" she replied a bit nervously, trying to remember one in particular. "Maybe... a heist could be fun"
"Oh! Yes, I was thinking the same thing! It's going to be so great, a huge, modern heist, you and me against the world! Sounds about right, yeah?" he replied excitedly.
Alise smiled a bit "Yeah- oh and just to make sure, we... we won't be actually committing a crime, right? This is all just for fun, right?"
"Oh- well of course! Don't worry, nooothing bad is going to happen" he reassured them, patting them on the back. "It'll be like playing secret agents, but in good ol' 2019!"
The district attorney widened their eyes. What... what did Mark just say? '2019'? That had to be a joke, right? It couldn't have been that long already... could it? It couldn't have been that long since the Poker night... it couldn't- Mark looked like he hadn't aged a day since she last saw him, nothing made sense anymore.
Eventually the actor caught on to Alise's weird reaction and waved his hand in front of their eyes "Earth to Alise, hellooo? Did I say something so shockingly amazing that you've been rendered speechless?" he grinned a littleShe shook her head "Mark... I-I need some answers before we start with your adventure, can I... can I ask you some questions?"
His grin immediately faded, and his expression got much darker; he knew he'd eventually have to explain to her some things, but he didn't think the time would come so soon. Would that put a wrench in his plans of finally having an adventure that was completely under his control? He didn't know, but he feared that refusing to give them the answers they wanted right away could've had a bad outcome. He sighed, lowering his glance and kicking the ground "I-I'll tell you, if I must..."
"Thank you, Mark..." Alise whispered, grateful that he was willing to talk "First of all... you said 2019, didn't you? Is this the year we are in right now? ... 2019?"
Mark silently nodded.
"Then..." her voice grew shaky "Then why did it take you so long to find me? It's- It's been DECADES, where were you? Why didn't you look for me right away?!" they yelled, falling back onto their armchair, her lips quivering and her eyes already welling up with tears. "Did you... did you think I was dead...?"
Mark was taken aback by that accusatory tone. He didn't know Alise still had it in her even after all that time, but it was to be expected, they DID use to be an attorney in the past. He took a deep breath "Right after the Poker night, I simply thought you'd left the manor with Benjamin and the others... your body was never found, unlike Abe's, so I-I just assumed that was the case, you must've left when things got too much for you, that's what I told myself all the time- but you... you never left, did you?"
