Alise thought about it. They knew what Mark would've enjoyed best, but they also couldn't stop feeling like no matter what, they should've tried not to get caught. She feared the consequences of getting locked up behind bars... she definitely couldn't handle that.

"Maybe... it's best if we take the sewers" she finally muttered, fidgeting with her hands.

Mark looked at her and sighed deeply "Aw, you're no fun!" he groaned "But you might be smart" he added, putting the bomb and revolver back inside his bag.
"Okay, if we're gonna take the sewer route, we might as well be as quiet as humanly possible... gimme some help with this manhole cover, will you?" he asked, walking up to the sewer entrance and gripping the lid with both hands.

Alise hurriedly did the same, and after some struggles they managed to take the cover off.
"T-thanks for the help-" Mark panted and then quickly jumped down... directly into the sewage, while Alise simply climbed down the stepladder and hopped onto solid ground.
"You could've... just taken the ladder..." they commented, glancing over at the man.

"... Shut up" he said, feeling a bit embarrassed as he wiped his face clean.

Alise simply giggled and kept following Mark throughout the sewers.

"I think we're on the right path" he said after a while "And... if I know my plan correctly..." he rustled in his bag, only to find out the sewer water had predictably turned the map into mush and made it unreadable "Oh... t-that's alright, that's okay! Because I have an impeccable sense of direction!" he tried reassuring her.

"Aalright... I'm trusting you..." Alise replied, feeling more and more confused on just how much control Mark had over this reality. The map getting destroyed really didn't seem to be in his plans... either that or he was an amazing actor- "Just to be sure, we're- DEFINITELY getting out of here, right?"

"Of course we are! I promise..." he said, further trying to reassure the district attorney, when suddenly...

"Hey, over here! I think they went into the sewer!"

As soon as they heard those voices, both Alise and Mark scrambled to find a good hiding spot, with the actor shoving the district attorney away and diving into a barrel full of water, while she hid behind a wall, hoping those two guards wouldn't turn around the corner.

"Yo man, I said it- I told them when they built it: putting a sewer entrance underneath what was supposed to be the most secure vault in the museum is just grossly irresponsible!" one of the guards ranted to the other.

"Yeah, I mean, I agree with you, but they don't really pay us to think... regardless, they gotta be around here somewhere" the other guard replied.

"Yeah you're right, you know what? We should split up, we'll cover more ground" the bigger guard suggested, much to the approval of the other one.

"That's a great idea, I love that idea!"

"No, you- you're the one who usually has the great ideas"

"No no, my ideas suck, you have the best ideas every time!"

They went on complimenting each other like that for a while, until they finally decided to split up and look for the two thieves. Luckily, they both hadn't chosen to head where they were hiding, otherwise they would've been in big trouble; still, Alise thought it was rather sweet how supportive of each other they seemed to be.

Once they were out of sight, Alise turned back to the barrel, only to see Mark emerge from it, covered in weeds and completely wet. He yelped as he struggled to get a grip on the barrel's rim and took a deep breath before freezing in place "Oh God!!" he shouted, wriggling out of it and falling onto the ground groaning.

"Bet you're regretting pushing me out of the way just to hide in there, huh?" Alise said, putting their hands on their hips, clearly remembering how much Mark wanted to take that hiding spot for himself.

The actor growled a bit "Next time... YOU get the barrel"

She giggled "Ooof course..." they muttered as they kept walking. If before they still had some doubts, now they were pretty much sure about it: Mark definitely did not have full control of that reality, no matter how hard he tried... the Mark she knew would have NEVER let his hair or clothes get drenched in water.

"A-anyway, let's keep going, the sewers have to drain somewhere so let's just follow the stream until we find the exit, it's that easy!" he said with a strained smile, the smile of someone who was still desperately trying to believe that they knew exactly what they were doing.

After a bit more walking along those narrow paths, the actor began complaining once more "God, why did you have to pick the sewer, huh? There's nothing good about a sewer! It's dark, it's dirty, it's damp- ugh..."

Alise furrowed their brows and hugged themselves "You- you gave me the option... I thought since you did, you would've been fine with either! And you know I'm not the type for fiery action" they answered, sounding somewhat distressed, they didn't want to upset him, fearing he might leave if they did, but they also wouldn't let him complain about their choice like that.

Mark looked back at them, looking like he was about to say something else, but then he sighed "I know, I know... it's okay..." he muttered, continuing forward until he found something that looked promising.
"Oh! Well, well, well... looks like our luck might be changing, I think the tunnel splits off two different ways down there, so, partner... what-"

Suddenly, they heard a scream, and right after, a man ran right down that tunnel, and thinking it might've been another guard once more, they both tried to find a good hiding spot. Alise was about to jump into a pile of trash bags, but Mark pushed them back again and hid there instead. With no other place to hide in, Alise simply looked as the guard ran down the path. It looked like... he was being chased by something... but they couldn't see what.

Shortly after, Mark peeked out from the trash bags, shaking off the dirt from his body and glaring at Alise "You wanted me to do that, didn't you?"

"Wh- you literally pushed me out of the way, AGAIN!" she replied.

"No, I didn't!" he answered raising his voice "Ugh, whatever, could you turn around for a moment?" he asked, trying to gain back his cool.

"S-sure..." Alise complied, turning around and waiting for another signal. When Mark tapped on their shoulder, they turned back to him and noticed he'd changed his outfit completely and instead of those black protective clothing, he was now wearing a fancy suit and tie.

"Alright, much better... now, whatever that guy was running from, I'm sure it couldn't have been that bad-" he began to say, until he heard an ungodly snarl and that same man screaming for his life, followed by other terrifying, fleshy and bloody sounds which got both of them to freeze in fear.
"Uh... or- or at least it didn't sound that close... so um, let's just keep moving"

"Y-yeah..." Alise replied, staying somewhat closer to the actor.

"And it looks like... we got two choices in front of us. The dark tunnel that that security guard just ran down from and then screamed and then died in, or the light tunnel, where there's possibly an end to it, where it might drain to an escape so we can be scot-free and enjoy our loot! Well? Which is it gonna be? Both are good options, take your pick... you haven't steered me wrong... yet"
