"Stop..." Alise muttered "I-if I'm the anomaly then does that mean... that if you shoot me I'll get reset?"
The scientist nodded "According to my calculations- yes, you and everything else will be reset!"
"Alise, where are you going with this?! You're not an anomaly! She's gonna kill you!!" Mark protested, grabbing the district attorney by the shoulders.
"I could be for all I know! And- and anyway, it's not like there's a better option for me at this point... look..." they said, rolling up their sleeve and bringing attention to their bitten arm. It was looking more swollen and rotten by the minute. Mark widened his eyes... why was everything going so wrong again? Why couldn't he have a happy ending for once? Why was he always forced to make terrifying choices?
The scientist gasped "Oh I'm so sorry..." she said, lowering her weapon.
"Oh you're sorry now, are you? You were just trying to kill her and NOW you're sorry?!" Mark said in a mocking voice.
She sighed "Hey, I'm not doing this because I ENJOY it, I'm trying to save humanity here!"
"Oh well, great job you big hero!" he scoffed.
"I'm not trying to be a hero!" the scientist replied picking up their weapon again "I'm just doing what needs to be done" she concluded, aiming at Alise and shooting.
"NO!!"
Alise felt time slow down in those seconds. They saw Mark jumping in front of them... the laser hitting him, his body recoiling from the impact and falling limp on the ground.
The smell of charred flesh filled the room; Alise felt light-headed, like they were about to throw up. They stared at Mark, their mind racing as they tried to find a way to fix it, to fix everything. They fell on their knees, their vision getting blurry.
"M-Mark?""Oh my God-" the scientist gasped, sounding mortified.
The man coughed and wheezed, he was still alive, but he wouldn't be for long... why did he do that? Why couldn't he just let Alise get shot instead? She was doomed anyway, he shouldn't have cared- why did he care?!
It always came down to that question... why did he care so much about them? He'd kept telling himself that it was simply because she was his last friend... because it felt nice to get compliments from them... but that reason did not satisfy him any longer, there was something more now, something like... the first glimpse of some human emotion he hadn't felt in nearly a century...
"Alise..." he gasped for air "Alise you gotta get out of here... run as fast as you can- take the box with you... get back to the base...""I'm not leaving without you!" Alise protested, her eyes welling up with tears.
"You need to! The plan-" he coughed "the plan is not dead yet- you gotta do as I say..."
"No... I- what's the use of completing the plan if you won't be there to see it?! No... I'm going to use the box now- I need to heal you!" they said, frantically rummaging through their bag and finally pulling out the box, nearly opening it.
"NO! Do not open it! We-we can't afford to lose it... it's our last chance..." Mark begged, holding his chest.
"I don't care about it..."
"Well I DO!!"
It was then that the scientist interrupted them "Hold on- what... what's that thing?"
"It's..." Alise began, glancing at Mark and then continuing, sitting on the ground "It's an ancient artifact... it can contain anything, and make anything happen- We stole it yesterday..." they explained.
"Stole it!?" she echoed, flabbergasted "S-so you're telling me you two stole an ancient artifact with those kinds of powers right before everything went to shit- and you've had it in your possession all this time?!"
