Alise hopped into the passenger seat, while Mark buckled up and started the car. They could hear sirens closing in, the police was giving chase to them, and although they weren't too close yet, that was going to change soon if they didn't do anything.

The actor stepped on the gas, and noticing Alise's nervous expression he spoke up "Uh- don't worry, I know how to lose them!" he said with confidence, suddenly turning off all lights and swerving the car into a smaller dirt road as fast as he could.
Unable to see them, the police cars kept going on the main road, and slowly the sirens grew farther and farther.
"Yeah. Yeah, take that, eh?" Mark snickered, looking back at the police cars all going the wrong way.

Alise was about to sigh in relief, when suddenly she saw a flash of light and two figures standing before them. They yelped, pointing at them "M-Mark! There's-"

But in a matter of seconds they were gone, and when Mark looked in front of him, he completely missed them "What? What were you looking at?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

"I-I saw two figures! It-it looked like aliens!" she said, clearly distressed.

The actor looked at them slightly concerned but then huffed "Don't lose your head, we're not out of the woods yet... heh" Mark said, chuckling at his own pun, which at least got Alise to smile a little "Anyways, no time for jokes... we're pulling off here, hold on!"

He drove a little while longer, then, he parked the car under some trees, to make it even harder to find "And... I think we're good! Let me consult my map real quick BUT, we are right where we need to be..." he muttered, pulling out the map from his bag and carefully checking it "Yeah, we're doing great! And... we got..." he rustled more in his bag "The box!" he said, holding the artifact up and kissing it "Oh... now all we need to do is lie low and wait for the heat to die down, and then we can enjoy the fruits of our labor!"

"Will- will this be able to really fix everything?" the district attorney eventually asked "You're sure we'll be able to control whatever this box holds, yeah?"

Mark scoffed "Of course I'm sure! Trust me on this, with this thing on our side... we'll be able to rewrite things however we want, no need to worry about anything else" he said, smiling warmly, but Alise still looked a little uneasy "Alright, tell you what, you can take a nap, I can see that you're very tired so- just get some rest okay? We'll think about what to do next in the morning"

The district attorney looked at him bashfully, finding it pretty sweet that Mark would let them sleep, but... they did feel tired, plus, all those visions they'd been having weren't doing any good to her mental health, so eventually she nodded "S-sounds good... thanks, Mark" they said, smiling a bit and snuggling up on the car's seat, closing their eyes.

The actor smiled back "Sweet dreams" he replied, making a little kissy sound with his mouth.

A couple hours later, once Alise had completely fallen asleep, Mark was still wide awake, staring at the box and caressing it. That right there... was the thing he'd been dreaming about for decades. No longer he'd have to put up with making subpar movies and hopping from hotel to hotel like a madman to avoid being caught by Dark. Everything was going to be perfect, he'd be a famous actor once more and he'd have all the power he could dream of to fight Dark on equal level... and so much more... but he had to be patient...
He looked at Alise, smiling slightly. She was going to be part of his perfect world too of course: she'd never backstabbed him or taken advantage of his wealth, and had forgiven him for everything that happened... but there was still something about them that made him feel weird; he wasn't worried about her betraying him, he was worried she might actually change him, after all the time he'd put into learning to solely care about himself to not get hurt again in the future, after all the precautions he'd taken to ensure all of his old friends would hate him forever... Alise still somehow managed to tug at his heartstrings. Time and time again he'd found himself feeling bad for blowing up at them, or concerned for their well-being or BOTH at the same time, which had him feel incredibly confused and almost overwhelmed by feelings he thought he'd never feel again for any human being outside of himself.

"Crap..." he muttered, realizing what that might've meant. He could've left... he could've left and put his plan in motion without having to worry about nobody but himself... and he almost did. He'd gotten out of the car, to get some fresh air, he tried imagining himself running away with the box, and leave her in the car. She'd be safe there, the police would look for him since he was the one who had the box; he was doing them a favor with going his own way-
But then a thought popped in his mind... the image of Alise crying, abandoned by the last person she had in this world, sobbing, calling his name. He felt his heart tighten... he could never do that, not to her.

"God, why am I like this?" he sighed, hiding his face in his hands and going back inside the car, relaxing on the driver's seat. He glanced back at Alise... she was still sleeping peacefully, but she seemed to be cold despite wearing a nice, thick sweater, so the actor decided to do something nice for once, and get a blanket from the back of the car, laying it on Alise so she'd stay warm, while he kept watch for the rest of the night, eventually getting yet another idea to make Alise happy once they woke up, looking forward to seeing them smile because of him.

The following morning, Alise woke up to the sound of sizzling and the smell of sausages being cooked, and for a moment, it felt like they were back in high school, waking up after a crazy party and getting a good breakfast before going back home. "W-what in the..." they muttered sluggishly.
It was then that they noticed the cozy blanket they'd been wrapped in and that caused her to blush... had Mark suddenly gone soft?

"Good morning, sleepyhead" he said, his voice warm and comforting "Hope you slept well" he added, smiling and carefully flipping the sausages with the smallest spatula Alise had ever seen.

"I-I did but... what's-what's all this?" she asked, surprised, but already unable to hold back a smile as they held the blanket up over their chest, not ready to leave its coziness just yet.

Mark gave her a smug smile "Oh, this? Just a little something... I thought you might appreciate it since things were very hectic for you yesterday" he pulled out two small plates and similarly small forks from his bag and handed one to Alise, giving her half of the sausages in the pan. "I know it's not much but..." he started, doing his usual fake-modesty act.

"Shush, this is perfect" the district attorney interrupted him with a happy little smile on her face as she ate her breakfast "Hey this is actually pretty good!"

The actor's smile was now more genuine; he couldn't understand why, but seeing Alise smile was the greatest thing "Well- I've learned a couple new skills throughout the years..." he muttered, quickly finishing up his breakfast "Whelp, I think it's time to drive back to base-"

"Aw, already?" Alise asked, eating the last bite of sausage and setting the plate aside.

"Well, yeah- aren't you excited to open the box and finally begin phase two of our plan?" Mark asked, raising his eyebrow.

Alise found herself blushing from embarrassment... they'd almost forgotten about the box, and found themselves thinking of how much they were enjoying themselves just by being with Mark and doing simple mundane things like eating breakfast together. "Oh- r-right! Well... Let's go then, I guess" she said, putting her seatbelt back on.

The actor nodded and tried turning the car on... only to hear the engine making a terrible, sputtering noise... were they out of gas, or was it something worse? Alise heard Mark sighing deeply, lightly banging his head on the steering wheel.
"It's fine! It's fine... because... you know what? I think we're not too far from the hotel- so we could always just walk straight through the woods over there and find it!" he began, trying to come up with other options. "Conversely- I could try to fix the engine! I've seen at least... one video on engines, so I kind of know what they look like... I-I'd have to guess tho, I've never seen this one before, but- how different could engines be, honestly?" he chuckled nervously "Yeah... I dunno, what do you think? I feel pretty confident that I could do either of these equally as good"
