I have always loved books since I was a child. I'd devour one book after another. In my mind, someday I'm going to write my own book.
This of course is a lofty dream. But when you are young, all kinds of dreams seem possible. There is no limit to what you can imagine yourself to be! You can be a movie star, a doctor, an astronaut, a president, a basketball player or a princess!
I'm no exception. I wanted to be an author (or a secretary because I wanted a job where I could always write).
But of course, I grew up.
And then there came responsibilities. Realities. Urgent tasks.
Things that never existed in my childhood came rushing in. There were always deadlines that needed to be met. Bills that needed to be paid. Chores that needed to be done. And so I've forgotten about my desire.
Once in a while I'd remember and tell myself, "I will write a book."
Then I'd shrug it off. Maybe someday, when I'll have more time, then I'm going to start working on that dream, along with others that I have wished for since I was a child.
So, I buried this desire in my heart. Dreaming is a luxury I can't do. Wanting to write a book is a desire I can't afford to feel. I have to work to earn money. To write a book would be a waste of my precious time.
Over the years, my desire got buried deeper and deeper.
And a very sad thing happened: I forgot that I wanted to write a book.
Did the same thing happen to you?
The dreams inside of you may have been buried in a frenzy of day-to-day tasks, demands and expectations.
To dream again would mean you have to expose yourself to discomfort, vulnerability and even failure. It would mean that you have to disrupt the current state of your life.
I understand you. It's just too easy to keep things the way they are now.
But then there is always this question as you look at your current life: Is this all that I ever wanted in this life?
You may have already asked this question. It may be this feeling of emptiness - of something more out there - that drew you to read this book.
Celebrate this feeling! This means that you are already on your way to working on your dreams.
If you are, then be prepared for another question that I will ask you in the next page.
