Chapter Four

The Giants

What Are Standing In Between You and Your Dreams?

A booming voice echoed in the valley, "I challenge the troops of Israel this day. Give me a man! Let us fight it out together!"

It was a challenge – not only to the people of Israel, but also to their God.

This went on for 40 days. Every day the giant would come out every morning and at night shouting the same challenge, "pick up your best fighter and pit him against me. If he gets the upper hand and kills me, the Philistines will all become your slaves."

It is like a superhero movie, except none wanted to be the hero. Not if it meant risking his life. Even the king's rewards – great riches, marriage to his daughter and tax exemption – could not lure the men to fight him.

Who would want to do it? Goliath was nearly 10 feet tall! He wore an armor that weighed 125 pounds (the weight of a small woman). His spear was described to be "like a fence rail" – with the tip alone weighing 15 pounds (the weight of a baby).

If that was not enough, Goliath also had a shield so large and heavy he needed another person to carry it around for him.

He was invincible.

No wonder the Israelites were afraid.

The victory – the dream – is already within their reach. But there is a big, powerful giant in between.

If only they could beat this giant, then the whole Philistines will be their slaves. There will be no more hiding in their homes. The freedom they so desire will be theirs.

But they would not dare fight.

The giant is too big.

They are only small.

And there is nothing they can do.
