Prom was slowly approaching, and while Ponyboy and Johnny wore suits given to them by the gang, Michelle needed to pick a prom dress she'd like.
Her solution to this problem? Purchase five dresses and have Ponyboy and Johnny give their opinions. She had them cover their eyes while she got the dress out of the closet, go to the bathroom to put it on, and then come out to have them give their comments on it.
Michelle put on the last dress she had. A purple gown with a v-neck top, and a glittery fabric the rest of the way down. Michelle loved it, but she wasn't sure if Steven would wear a purple tie. He said colors like purple and pink were 'girl colors'.
Sayings like that never made much sense to Michelle. How could a color be assigned to a gender? People said that purple and pink were more feminine. But how? It made no sense.
"Okay, this one." Michelle twirled in a small circle before stopping to face Ponyboy and Johnny.
"I like it," Johnny said, smiling. When Johnny got asked to prom, he was the happiest guy in the entire world.
"It's pretty." Ponyboy grinned.
"I was gonna wear my pearl earrings and my pearl necklace!" Michelle sighed quietly, remembering that Steven wasn't going to match with her. He didn't even want her to wear the purple dress. He said it was too 'revealing'.
"What's wrong, don't you like it?" Ponyboy asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Yeah, it just..." Michelle paused. "I'm gonna get dressed and explain when I come back." The boys nodded and Michelle went to the bathroom to get changed back into her sweater and jeans. She came back to her room, fixing her earrings.
"Steve said he wasn't gonna match with the purple dress because it was a girl's color and that I shouldn't even wear it because it was too revealing." Michelle shrugged.
"Just go with someone else, who isn't an asshole," Ponyboy suggested.
"Like who?" Ponyboy glanced at Johnny.
"Literally any boy in our school who doesn't think like that." Johnny nodded.
"Or someone who doesn't go to our school," Johnny muttered. Michelle furrowed her eyebrows.
"Like um, Dally. He'd happily take you to prom and match with you and he wouldn't say anything about your outfit." Michelle glanced at her shoes.
Ever since she visited the Curtis house again, she couldn't stop thinking about him. She hated the fluttering feeling she got when she saw him again. She hated the fact that she still loved him. She hated the fact that he seemed like he didn't even care when she showed up. He had just a blank expression on his face. He didn't love her, so she needed to push herself to love Steven.
"If we were together I would."
Suddenly Michelle's bedroom door swung open, Randy barging in.
"Michelle, I gotta tell you something." She glanced at Ponyboy and Johnny who sat scared on her bed.
"Can it wait?" She asked, looking him up and down. He looked frantic.
"No!" He shouted, taking Michelle by surprise.
"Okay! Let's go to another room." Randy nodded frantically before Michelle took him to the guest bedroom.
"You need to break up with Steven."
"What! why?" Michelle asked.
"Because I heard some things that he was planning to do on prom night. I mean, I knew he wasn't the best guy but I didn't know he was that bad. It's really my fault, I told Cherry to tell you that Dally had kissed her even though he didn't! You just told me that he didn't say that he loved you back and you looked so upset and I thought it was the right thing to do!" Michelle felt like someone had punched her in the gut.
"What did you say?" Her voice wavered as she felt her emotions getting the better of her.
"You want me to repeat all of that?"
"You made that whole thing up?! I broke up with a guy I loved because you thought it was the right thing to do?!" Michelle yelled, Randy's face went pale as he realized what he said.
"Michelle, I didn't mean to say that. It was an accident!" God, he was stupid, Michelle thought.
"So when were you gonna tell me?! After I regretted breaking up with him?! You were with me through all of the nights that I cried myself to sleep because of him! How could you do something like that?!" Michelle felt a knot forming in her throat, tears already falling down her cheeks.
"Michelle-"
"Get out of my goddamn house, now!" Randy stood stunned in the room for a couple of moments before he finally left. Michelle walked back to her room, Johnny and Ponyboy sitting idly on Michelle's bed.
"I can drive Johnny and me home, but if it helps you at all, Dally's probably leaving Buck's right now." Michelle smiled slightly at Ponyboy. She gave him and Johnny and small hug before she ran down the stairs and out the door, despite the rain.
