The carriage rolled to a stop as they arrived at their destination. Adam opened the door and stepped out onto the ash covered ground, causing the ash to rise up and swirl with every step. Kale greeted him, helping Ivy out of the carriage, smiling at her as she wrinkled her nose.
Adam had sent Kale ahead with the demon after Hank's unplanned visit. Though he had only arrived a couple of days before them, it should have been plenty to start the process.
Ivy glanced around the barren landscape. Trees stopped growing, and she was sure there was only dirt beneath her feet. The ash covered the ground like a giant dark grey blanket. In the distance was a large stone structure protruding from the mountain side.
Though it was the sheer cliffs above it disappearing into the clouds that had her gasp in surprise. Trayson was nestled against its own mountain range, but on clear sunny days she could still see the snow-covered peaks.
Kale led them quietly up a hill so they could look down into a crater that Ivy hadn't noticed. He remained stiff and ridged as Adam stood beside him pleased. Ivy glanced into the pit and covered her mouth looking away, sickened by what she saw. Kale glanced at her briefly before turning to his chuckling friend. He gave Kale a pat on the back for a job well done before turning to Ivy.
"Beautiful, isn't it? So many willing to die just for me." Adam told her in his seductive voice. He grabbed her arm pulling her in close.
"Don't worry love. You will be the final sacrifice that will bring my dream to life." Adam told her stroking her cheek. Kale didn't say anything as he turned to leave.
"Do not fail me." Adam called over his shoulder. Kale needed to get away from Ivy, so Adam was sending him on a pointless mission. One that would keep him away for weeks.
"Have I ever?" Kale asked in a bored tone. He picked a horse tied to a post Ivy hadn't noticed and darted off into the night, leaving Ivy and Adam alone. Well mostly alone. Adam grabbed Ivy's arm, painfully dragging her down into what Ivy prayed was a terrible nightmare.
The crater floor was lined with naked bodies, lifeless and cold. Most of them were young women though she could see a young man here or there. All of them had their throats sliced and their blood drained to feed to the demon.
"Isn't it beautiful?" Adam asked her again as he dragged her along. Ivy stared at him in horror, not sure where he was finding the beauty in such gruesome scenes. She knew he wasn't the perfect man she had been so madly in love with, but to see him smiling at such sights. How well had he hidden the monster he truly was?
There were some men standing around an altar that seemed quickly thrown together as it sat placed next to a statue on a wooden pedestal. As Ivy got close enough, she saw the statue was more than a well-built, naked man. He was darkness, pure evil. She could feel his energy trying to suck away her light.
