This job seemed to consistently deviate from what I would consider to entail daycare responsibilities. I simply stared down at the flayed carcass, mercilessly ripped apart beyond any recognition like a bloodied heap of raw ground beef.
THUD.
Eclipse dropped down from the rafters, looking worse for wear. There were crimson handprint smears along his body, especially around his face. One of his lower arms had been reduced to a dangling stump, the missing half of it still clutched in my trembling hands. An ominous static noise followed him, his deteriorating voice box grating with a snarl.
"Back already? You are stupider than I thought." Eclipse hissed, almost sounding disappointed amid the haze of static. I bit down on my tongue, shifting from foot to foot as I scoured my brain for some bullshit excuse to stall.
"I was wondering if we could...talk." Was all I came up with. Brilliant. "I don't want to fight." I admitted quite honestly, watching him warily. "You're broken as-is, anyhow."
"Thanks to you." He snarled, lurching forward into a sprint. Eclipse didn't exactly look like he was in the mood to bargain. Ignoring my better instincts, I stood my ground. I don't think I could've gone far, anyway. Eclipse closed the distance between us, slowing to a halt when he realized I wasn't playing his game of chase. He leaned forward to where our faces were mere inches apart, his eyes scanning mine as his mouth curled into a snarl.
"Not running anymore, I see."
"You broke my ribs!" I countered as I grit my teeth, returning the hostile gaze. "We're both...damaged. Let's just call it a truce."
Eclipse scoffed, jabbing a taloned finger at my chest. I coughed hoarsely at the uncomfortable pressure.
"Look at you, getting all brave! What set you over the edge, hmm?" He mused tauntingly before his amusement faded in an instant, his voice dropping to a venomous hiss. "I should tear you apart right here and now." Eclipse sneered.
"Go on, then."
"Yeah, you'd like that?" He cackled, his tone twisting darker as he circled like a shark in blood-tinged waters. It purged an unwelcome shudder that did not escape his eyes. "What? You know I can't help it..." he mocked with a leer. "This...soft spot...just for you." A flick of a long tongue across razor teeth indicated sinister intent seething below the deceptively pleasant lilt in his voice. "Though I've got a couple of hard spots you'll like-"  he was cut off as I cuffed him upside the head. He growled, then laughed, though his grin didn't meet his eyes.
"I'll fucking kill you, sweetheart." He chuckled, his tone completely betraying his deadly threat.
"What's stopping you?" I prodded, and then immediately regretted I said anything. Eclipse's eyes narrowed to thin slits. But then he grinned, and I got a whole lot more nervous.
"Well, I suppose you're just too entertaining," he rumbled thoughtfully, a smirk tweaked on the corner of his mouth, "And I just love how prettily you beg whenever I actually go to finish the job- how could I possibly waste that...potential, hmm?"
"You're disgusting," I spat, revolted at his insinuation.
"Oh, but I know you'll never leave me, isn't that right?" His body shuddered, his extra set of arms- well, arm and stump- dissipating into a tangle of wires that retracted into his torso. He doubled over, grunting with pain as he changed.
A beat of silence passed as I doubted my eyes.
"Sunbeam?"
It truly felt like ages since I'd heard his voice.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Sun sobbed, his arms wrapping tightly around my shoulders as he pulled me into an embrace. I could feel the sting of tears.
"I'm gonna...I'm gonna fix you. I promise." I choked out, my voice trembling slightly.
I could feel his body shudder. Something slithered around my waist, pulling me in tight against his body.
"Didn't take you to be the sappy type, sweetheart." Eclipse rumbled with a chuckle.
Anger was an understatement.
"You son of a bitch!" I yelled, choking down tears and another coughing fit as I slammed my fists against him and fought against his embrace. "Give them back!"
"Temper, temper." Eclipse tutted, unaffected from my pathetic assault. He was grinning, but it didn't quite match the hollow look in his gaze as I finally shoved myself away.
"Get used to the disappointment." He rasped lowly, tauntingly.
"Maybe I wouldn't hate you so much if you didn't take them away!"
Eclipse didn't like that.
"Hate, hmm?" Eclipse scoffed. "That's a strong word for your little feelings." He mused, his venomous undertone cutting through the static in his voice as yellow eyes narrowed. "If anything, I've got much more reason to be hateful."
He took a step closer, and I took one back. Eclipse scoffed, and then tackled me to the ground, pinning me down with his three arms. He grabbed me by my chin, forcing my gaze to bore directly into his.
"No, no. You don't understand. A reason to hate would entail being hidden away like some blight. Treated like a living cancer among counterparts. Not some...fault of human anatomy."
There was a heavy moment of silence as he simply watched me, his expression flickering between mockery and true, unbridled rage.
"Look at you. You'd just love to cut me out, wouldn't you?" He hissed contemptuously, tracing a talon intimately along my throat. Then he laughed. "Just like everyone else, you sheep!"
One tightly-closed fist plunged into the concrete directly next to my head, leaving a sizable dent in the floor.
"Much. More. Reason." Eclipse reminded lowly, pupils constricting into narrow pinpoints.
