Rude Awakening

I was sitting in my room finishing up my summer school homework when it happened. Before I tell you what happened, let me fill you in on why I was stuck in my room. I've made the mistake of not keeping up with my previous school year's work, so I was given a choice: I could fail and be held back to relearn everything, or I could work on a summer school packet all summer long and turn it into the office on the first day of school.

I sighed heavily. I didn't know failing one class would land me in this situation. I thought ruefully. My parents weren't letting me do anything that I wanted to do until I finished that packet. No computer, no phone, no T.V., nothing. My friends were probably disappointed in me because of my poor life choices. I can't plan meetups or call them all summer. Even though they all lived on my block, I was stuck inside.

My hand cramped horribly, and I dropped my pencil. "Ow, ow, oww..." I groaned. "Ugh. I'm done for the day. I can't keep writing."

I stood up to go get a snack from the kitchen. My mom was sitting on the couch, reading a book. She looked up when she heard me coming. "Shouldn't you be working?" she asked, her voice edged with frustration and exasperation.

"I've finished today's work." I replied, keeping my voice even and emotionless.

Mom had me pinned under her fierce stare. She went back to her book. "Dad will check it when he's done with work. Don't forget to let him know."

I walked into the kitchen, with my head down. I opened the pantry to grab a snack. But right as I opened the cabinets, everything went dark for a few seconds. "What the?!" I yelled. "Mom, is it a power outage?"

Before my mom answered, the ground shook so viciously I lost my balance and stumbled, and hit my head on the floor. Bright bolts of pain crackled through my body, and I felt dizzy.

"What was that?" My mom screamed.

I felt dizzy, but I slowly managed to sit up. "It.. sounded like... something hit. Maybe an asteroid hit.. Nearby?" My thoughts were slow at first, but my head slowly stopped spinning.

I stood up, wanting to investigate. The only light there was the faint glow of my mom's yell0w eyes. "Ace, what are you doing?" my mom asked harshly.

"What do you think I'm doing?" I spun around, the tip of my tail rattling angrily. "I'm going to see if my friends are ok!"

Mom's eyes narrowed, but she didn't say anything. She flicked her tail, as if dismissing me.

I bolted towards my front door, and swung it open. Immediately, I realized that there was a smoking crater in the middle of the street. I saw that there was a crowd at the edge of it. I recognized my friends immediately.

"Guys! What happened?" I ran over to them.

They all turned around, and all of their eyes lit up. My girlfriend, Black, broke away from the group and ran towards me. "Ace! I thought your parents grounded you?" she jumped into my arms and we stood there for a moment.

"Yeah.. but she let me out of the house to see what happened. Speaking of- what happened?" I went over to the crater.

There were four people and three hellborn counting me- Conner, who was also an imp, and Black- who is of higher power then all of us. The four humans were Will, Via, Jay, and Noah. Will had short, scruffy blonde hair, Via had a messily cut layered bob, Noah had really long, straight hair, and Jay had short fluffy hair.

"Ace!" Jay ran over to me. "We were sitting in your front yard."

"Wait, in my front yard?"

Black shrugged. "We sat in front of your window and tried to get your attention."
