The Reveille

It would be an act of kindness
To let you fall away.
Where the thin arms sway.
Into the abyss.
You thought the lightness, too light.
You were unbearably loud.
You were too brash, too proud.
Utterly remiss.

You wanted the trophy,
You wanted to shine.
You wanted what's mine.
A beneficiary.
But your credit was bad
And the rides aren't cheap
The cost is too steep
To fly revolutionary.

I'm done parenthesizing,
'cause you just popped in
'cause you just caught wind
And now you want to make time.
It could be no clearer.
I can't bring you along
If you won't learn the song
You've been reassigned.

So take this dismissal
With the mercy intended.
Your plan's been upended.
Take off your beret.
Your hands held high,
I patiently wait.
I slowly cachinnate,
While they loop the reveille.
