    Jex reached up and pulled his helmet off. He let his short, dirty blonde hair hang over his ears. He didn't feel like fixing it right now. The civilians didn't have any place to stay due to most of their town having been destroyed. Most of them went to stay with relatives, but some couldn't so the UNSC was providing shelter for them in tents near the base. Jex flopped onto his bed and closed his eyes. Harley's head hung over from the top bunk. "You look exhausted." She commented. "What do you think? We just challenged an army that outnumbered us five to one, of a species we haven't even seen before. And won." Jex still has his eyes closed while he spoke. Jex eventually faded into sleep until the horn sounded for them to eat dinner. Jex and the rest of iron sauntered to the mess hall. It was packed full of civilians, all waiting to eat. Jex felt a tug on his pants. He turned to see the girl he had rescued earlier that day. "Are you the Spartan who saved me?" She asked. Jex knelt down and nodded. "Yes I am." He replied with a smile on his face. "Thank you!" She shouted, thrusting her arms around him in an embrace. Jex returned it, but soon let go as soon as Luis saw him. Jex abruptly stood up and blushed a little. Luis simply giggled a bit and shook his head. "What was that about?" He whispered. "Uhh, I saved that girl's life earlier sir. She was just saying thank you." Jex stood there awkwardly. Eventually they got their food before heading outside to eat. Harley stood there, eating slowly as Weston and Luis talked about the newest weapons in the arsenal. "So, you willing to talk without turning it into an argument?" Jex looked at Harley. She huffed and rolled her eyes. "Spartans are bred to fight." She said. "Imma take that as a no." Jex turned back to his food. As they headed back to their barracks for the night, Jex looked up at the early night sky. Stars twinkled and danced in the dark abyss. He smiled. He laid down in his bed before once again falling asleep.
