Later in the day, Daniel, Amanda, Sam and Odette were seated in the packed Northridge City Council chambers, the hum of muffled voices and the occasional shuffling of papers filling the air.
They'd been waiting for what felt like an eternity as an old man droned on about manholes and maintenance covers, completely oblivious to the importance of the matter at hand. The All Valley Karate Tournament was on the line, and it was hard to stay focused on anything else.
"Don't worry, Dad. You got this." Sam reassured her father.
"Yeah, you'll be fine." Odette added with a tight smile, trying to lighten the mood. She was at least trying to forgive everything Daniel had done.
Daniel smiled back, appreciating the support, though his nerves were evident as he clutched his speech tightly in his lap. He'd prepared for this moment for weeks, but standing in front of the city council, facing off against his past and Johnny Lawrence, was something else entirely. As he looked down at the papers in his hands, Odette suddenly turned toward him, her eyes widening as someone took the seat beside her.
"What are you doing here?" Daniel asked, clearly thrown off by the unexpected appearance of his old rival.
"Fighting for the All Valley." Johnny explained before nodding toward the stack of papers in Daniel's lap. "What about you? Gonna read from your diary?"
Daniel let out a breath, clearly irritated but keeping his cool. "Nothing wrong with being prepared."
Johnny shrugged. "Yeah, and I don't need notes. I'll shoot from the hip."
Daniel turned to his family, a nervous sigh escaping his lips. "This is gonna be a disaster."
Just as he sat that, the councilwoman banged sharply, drawing everyone's attention. The council woman cleared her throat. "Okay, next we will hear appeals for the cancellation of the All Valley Under-18 Karate Tournament. Who would like to speak first?"
Odette exchanged a look with Sam, both of them watching as Johnny and Daniel immediately stood, each ready to take the stage. But before either of them could make it to the podium, someone had already claimed the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I'm retired Army Captain John Kreese." The man introduced himself in a voice that carried authority and disdain.
"Thank you for your service." The councilwoman responded politely.
Kreese nodded with a grin. "It was an honor to serve. And I continue to serve right here in our community, by teaching our children strength and discipline through karate. I was devastated to hear about the cancellation of the tournament because of the fight at the high school. Why are my students being penalized because of the violence perpetrated by... dojos like Miyagi-Do?"
"Now, wait just one minute." Daniel began as he stepped forward, ready to defend his dojo.
"Mr. LaRusso, please. It's not your turn to speak." The woman informed.
