While they walked along the road to the retreat place that Robby's mum was in, they talked of their futures and small things like where they wanted to live, and how their lives would be. Well, more like Brooklyn rambled on about how she wanted her life to go in an ideal world while questioning Robby in a way that wasn't pushy yet somehow got him to open up for a short while, until he got Brook chattering away again.
As she talked, her smile lit up her face and Robby couldn't help but smile along with her, once again admiring the joyous look on her face as she focused on the future as a way of ignoring the pain of her past- at least for a small while anyway.
Soon they were at the retreat and Robby wasn't wrong when he said it was fancy. suddenly Robby became still and quiet just as they got to the entrance. Brook could sense that he was nervous, so in an attempt to calm his nerves and stop the doubt that was swirling around in his head she hugged him, quite suddenly, making him look at the smaller girl in surprise before he hugged her back, relishing in her warm embrace.
Once they both let go, Brooklyn entwinned their hands together and basically marched them up to the front desk, letting Robby talk to the receptionist who looked sceptically at the two teens before reluctantly telling them how to find Robby's mom. After listening to this, they set off again still hand in hand.
"She definitely doesn't like us," Brooklyn whispered to Robby as the walked through the hall to the outside area that his mom was supposed to be in.
"Yeah, don't think she'll be giving us any lollypops" he replied in a hushed tone as they both tried to contain their laughter, but failed miserably.
"Don't worry, when we walk back out of here I'll swipe some for us, if you promise to distract her" Brook said sticking her pinky out, for a pinky promise, which Robby accepted chuckling out a "deal" in response to the girl's childish antics.
They stopped laughing as they opened the doors, and stepped out as Robby dragged Brook over to a quite pretty middle-aged woman, who jumped up to hug Robby as soon as he was in her line of sight.
After their reunion, Robby sat down across from his mum as Brooklyn stood supportively behind him, as Robby introduced her to his mum. After food arrived for Robby and Brook, Robby's mum went off as the two continued to eat, being wary that they may have to leave soon. But instead of Robby's mum, a middle aged man, who she recognised as Mr. LaRusso, came and sat in her place at the table.
"Nice cut," he said as he sat down, motioning towards Robby's hair.
"Sorry you've been stuck clearing up my mess," he replied quietly, as Brook squeezed his shoulders slightly in a supportive manner, "And I'll pay you back for the van."
"I didn't think that van was your style anyway," he said with a forced chuckle, trying to lighten the mood as he looked up at Brooklyn, who in return gave him a limp half-hearted smile.
After a moment of silence, he got serious again "Look, I know it must've been rough on your own out there, or at least just you two teens any way," he said, looking up at Brooklyn, who looked down and focused on her hands gripping Robby's shoulders for support. She couldn't tell what or why, but her senses were telling her that something wasn't quite right, so she was on high alert.
"Is Sam ok?" he suddenly asked, looking up at Mr. LaRusso for the first time, causing a small pang of pain and jealousy to strike up in Brook, who ignored it. He had every right to care about this girl, who despite everything she'd done, he still cared about. But that didn't stop the question from sitting heavy on her heart, due to the care she had grown to have for the boy who she had only known for a short period of time.
"She's ..." he paused, seemingly trying to find the right words to use, "worried about you. We all are." he replied, as Brooklyn's grip on him loosened slightly as she felt like she was intruding on something that she shouldn't.
"Your dad too." he went on and Brook felt Robby tense beneath her, so she re-tightened her supportive grip on him, despite her gut telling her she should run, she stayed for him.
Mr. LaRusso sighed before continuing again, "Robby, I need to apologise to you."
But before he could continue, Robby cut him off, "But I caused this." he said down-heartedly, "I kicked Miguel-"
"I know you blame yourself, but I let you down" he said cutting Robby off and stirring sadness in Brooklyn at the fact that that's all she's ever wanted her mum to say to her. "What I said to you the last time that we saw each other, that was ... terrible. I'm so sorry."
"But you were right. It was a mistake trying to help me. I can't change." he replied suddenly, full of self-doubt and depreciation. Brook felt helpless as she didn't know how to comfort him, so she kept one hand squeezing his shoulder and grabbed his hand, squeezing that with the other. An interaction that didn't go unnoticed by Daniel.
"We all make mistakes Robby. But our mistakes aren't who we are. You could learn from your mistakes. And I'll help you with that. I will. And I'm sure others will too," he said looking up at Brooklyn who stared back at him with a weak smile.
"Listen ..." he continued, "this next part is going to be really, really hard, ok? But this is the best way forward. I spoke to a lawyer and he explained to me that it's ..." he said, suddenly stopping at the sound of radios going off.
Letting go of him, both Brook and Robby turned around to see a police officer coming up to them, as Robby stood up quickly, flinging his chair to the side in the process, instinctively stepping in front as Brook.
Robby looked over at Mr. LaRusso with a look of betrayal as another officer entered the space, trapping them in.
"What did you do?" he questioned, fear evident in his voice as Brooklyn instantly clung onto his arm, assessing their surroundings and trying to find a way to escape.
"I told them you'd turn yourself in. Trust me the sentence will be much lighter." he replies calmly.
"No, no, no, I can't!" Robby shouted.
"I can't go back to Juvie!" Brooklyn shouted, drawing Daniels attention for just a second as a look of guilt flashed across his face, looking at the scared look etched across her features.
"You can. You have to." he replied turning his attention back to Robby.
"You kept me talking so I wouldn't leave."
"No I was trying to help you." he said, as Robby grabbed onto Brook and tried to make a run for it. But the first officer easily caught onto Robby and manhandled his arms behind his back, while Brook watched horrified. She could hear Mr. LaRusso shouted at the officer, but all she could focus on was Robby, as she stood stuck in place in shock, but some started shouted at the officer.
"Let him go, it's not his fault, please! Stop it! You're hurting him!"
But it was no use as the officer held him in place, still hurting him, and the other officer had recognised her from her recent arrest warrant.
"Brooklyn Davis, I'm arresting you too," he said holding her roughly as she tried to escape, but not as harshly as the other one was with Robby.
"No! Please I need to talk to my social worker, she'll tell you what my mums like and that I technically haven't even done anything wrong." she said to the officer, desperately trying to free herself as Daniel tried to tell Robby he was going to get him through this.
"You can speak to your social worker when we get to the station." he stated calmly, keeping his grip on the distraught girl, leading her over next to the officer with Robby.
"I will visit you every day I promise." he said looking between a beaten Robby and a silently crying Brooklyn.
"Don't bother." he replied coldly, masking his pain with a look of anger as he and Brooklyn were dragged off, as Robby's mum tried to comfort him, but he just shrugged her off and the interaction only made Brook more sorry for herself.
She wasn't going to be stealing any lollypops with Robby anytime soon.
