Ruby aimlessly roamed the halls of the palace late at night like she used to when she was younger. The dimly lit walls now devoid of jewels were a sweet reminder of how much she's changed this kingdom for the better. Still, her pride and joy was her son, Prince Cliff.
Ruby rounded a corner and jumped back, nearly colliding with a guard. "My apologies, your majesty," the guard said formally.
"It's fine, Eagle. Don't worry about it," she dismissed. Eagle was wearing the normal decorative brigandine that most palace guards wore during peace time. His dagger sheathed at his side, spear no where to be found. Queen Ruby herself had removed almost all jewelry she usually wore for this nightly walk. Only her Ruby earring and a gold necklace remained.
Eagle peaked around the corner Ruby came from, then behind him before speaking. "How's Cliff!?" He beamed, full of excitement. She could see the passion sparkle in his eyes as he mentioned his name. "Is he doing ok?" Eagle's smile was as sweet as ever.
Ruby sighed. "Yeah, he's fine. He started music lesson's recently. Playing piano," Ruby explained, hoping this conversation wouldn't last long. He's not suppose to talk about Cliff in the first place.
"Really!? I know piano, I could teach him!" He said with a genuine smile, his eyes full of love as they shined in the torch light.
Ruby gave him a bittersweet smile. "Eagle," she said plainly. They both knew he couldn't. He promised to not mention it ever, and Ruby had already told Cliff his real father was dead. It was too late to give up the fib now.
Eagle's face dropped. His smile gone, his eyes no longer shining with joy, now they sparkled with a glassy texture. He sighed, defeated. "I know," he said. "I know."
"Hey," Ruby said and nudged him, trying to cheer Eagle up. "Walk with me. Please?" She offered him an inviting smile.
He returned it. "Sure. I'd love to."
The two walked in silence down the halls. They made their way up a few flight of stairs before ending up where Scarlet used to sit to watch her arena matches. Obviously the arena was gone, but the balcony here remained. Ruby sat down near the edge, leaning against the railing she had installed recently.
The moons shined brightly on the surrounding area, the cool night air gently brushing past her body. "It's peaceful," she whispered.
"It is," Eagle leaned on the railing beside her and gently put a wing on her back.
She smiled at his friends my gesture. Her feelings towards him were mixed. She liked him, he was nice, sweet, compassionate, caring, handsome, and endowed just to her liking. Still, she was forced with him against her will. Against both of their wills. Scarlet forced Ruby to bare an heir to the throne so the Queen at the time threw her own daughter into the breeding program where she was matched with Eagle.
Eagle did everything in his power to make sure Ruby at least somewhat enjoyed it. And even though she still wasn't happy with the situation, she was glad it was with someone as caring as Eagle, and she was so glad she had a dragonet as wholesome and loving as Cliff. Come to think of it, Cliff and Eagle shared a lot of similarities. Physical and personality.
"How's you're life been?" Eagle asked. "And I mean your personal life, not running the kingdom and stuff."
Ruby shrugged. "I think the only issue I've had so far is with the return of Scarlet. Of course, I took care of that," Ruby thought back to Peril. Looking back, she felt bad for the poor dragoness with too much fire. All she wanted was a loving family and friends to ask her how she was doing. She was getting sidetracked. "After I made sure Cliff was ok, we went back to normal and ever since then things have been going fine. I've become pretty close friends with Queen Glory, and Queen Thorn has my full support if anything was to happen over there." She explained.
