Bucky woke up on the cold floor with labored breath, and his fingers immediately reached for his dog tags. He hated dreaming about his days as the Winter Soldier. It was never good. It always ended the same way. But what hurt him more was dreaming about it and Lilly at the same time.
He dreaded going to sleep because he knew there was a possibility of waking up screaming her name. Still feeling her broken neck under his fingers. It didn't matter that it was just a dream and that she was safe. Safe but away from him. And that thought always made him feel lighter... more terrified. So yes, he avoided the bed, giving the couch his preference, because he knew she wouldn't be there, lying by his side and running her fingers over his hair and shooing his demons away.
He stood up and went to the apartment's small kitchen to prepare breakfast.
Sitting on the chair with a silent sigh and cupping a glass of coffee with both hands, he watched the way the hot steam spiraled in the quiet cold air. Taking a sip from the hot liquid, he looked around, searching for something he already knew wasn't there. The only sound in the dark place coming from the soccer match on the television.
It was time to stop thinking about the past and get ready for the day, so he walked to his bedroom for a quick shower. Looking at the mirror beside the bed, he ran his flesh fingers on the grooves of his metal arm. The cold from the prosthetic seeped into his already lonely soul. He lifted his mechanical fingers and heard the cogs turning when he closed and opened them. Averting his eyes from the machine, he observed the man looking back at him in the mirror.
His eyes fell on his short hair, and the ghost of her fingers touched him. Her fingernails trailing down his temple to his chin to pull his face back up and kiss him with those soft lips adorned with the dark lipstick that made his heart flutter. His eyes landed on his arm again, and he threw a jacket on. Hiding it from the world. Leaving the room, he almost forgot to take his gloves with him.
Going down the stairs to reach the street, he held the building's front door open so his elderly neighbor could walk her white Shih-Tzu. Not before the dog tried to jump onto his arms, though. She thanked him and started talking about how the little devil got all happy and excited when it saw him. He let the door close behind him and parted from the senior woman with a smile on his face. Bucky waved for a taxi and checked his watch. He was already five minutes late for his appointment.
