1) The Reaping

Clove's P.O.V

The night was falling and the sky was glowing amid the moonlight. I and many others have been trained to fight to the death and you could say I've gotten used to it, but not really. Tomorrow would be the day my father expects me to Volunteer. I've been in training now for 10 years starting when I was only 6 years old. Now 16 I am handy with some knives, and can shoot perfectly with a cross bow too.

You would think that I have it all together. That I would win the Hunger Games. But there is one thing in my way. Cato Hadley. He's strong and can hit bullseye with a spear or sword, he's also very good looking and that will do well in the capital. And he's obviously going to Volunteer.

I clear my head and settle on my bed, I close my eyes breathing slowing preparing myself to be able to volunteer before somebody else does. I pull a knife from under my pillow and aim for my dart board, my eyelids still shut tightly. Taking a leap of faith I throw the knife careful not to hit my wall. I open my eyes and see the knife land on fifty not center. I guess nerves it's definitely not my best shot.

I look closely at the dress my step-mom laid on my bed. It was a Lilac dress that goes just above my knees with laced flower petals on the shoulders. It was of course a beautiful dress. My step sisters Ash and Faith are 12 and 13 but they won't be volunteering as they promised my step mom. My real sister Gem, is 14 and is becoming a young lady she is also not going to volunteer as she promised me. My dad is off hunting he won't be here for the reaping, he never is. He doesn't care if I volunteer or not I just want to prove him wrong.

All of the sudden Gem comes in behind me. "Can you zip me up?" I say. She doesn't say anything but does what I tell her. I turn around and tears are dripping down her rose like cheeks. I wipe them off and she placed a gold flower barrette into my hair. "For good luck." She finally says.

I kiss her forehead and tell her to get ready herself. As she leaves I see the barrette it's also beautiful. I braid my hair to the side and place the barrette in place. I truly am beautiful now.

I wouldn't say my family is wealthy for a fact my parents struggled paying for my training. But like the hunger games we had sponsors people who really believed that I had a lot to bring to the table. The only reason my dad remarried was that after my mom died of a heart attack he couldn't support the family by himself anymore. However it turns out that when he did get married he was to my disbelieve happy. The next year my new baby sister was born, Faith. Another year had past and they weren't happy yet so then came my next sister Ash. Not to be rude but I have to say Ash and Faith aren't very friendly. Spoiled, would be my word for them.

As I step upon the gravel surrounding the town square. With Gem behind me, Ash and Faith behind her, I walk up to a booth where I give a lady my finger. With one of the capitol's new high tech it pinches my skin and the remaining blood is placed as a fingerprint onto a piece of paper. I leave Gem and go the the section where my age group is at. "I can't do it!" I say under my breath, how could I ever volunteer? But before I could hesitate Madelyn Rose came, "Welcome! This years 74th annual Hunger Games, but before we start I have a video for you." She says in a fake sweet smile.

"War....Terrible.....War" The video begins the same every year. "Well wasn't that lovely?" Madelyn says but nobody really cares. "Okay now of course ladies first." She says as she walks up the the girls bowl. She digs around and grabs a piece from the top. "Clove Sevina." Madelyn says calmly. I slowly walk up to the stage not knowing what just happened. "Okay and now for the boys!" She says now a lot more perky. "Dylan Rae." She announces. "I volunteer as tribute!" says a boy with golden hair. Then my initial thoughts were "ARE YOU GOD DAMN SERIOUS?" I better be ready because victory was going to be a lot harder with Cato Hadley in this competition.
