5) The Games

We got up early the next day at the Crack of dawn to get ready for the games. A take a shower that possibly will be my last for a while, so I make sure to get all the gind off my body. Madelyn says breakfast will be at the camp right under the arena. Soon enough we make it to the hovercraft I fortunately got to sit next to fire girl. As they give us our trackers fire girl stupidly asked the Avox what it was.

When the hovercraft finally slowed down we all went out slowly one by one. We enter another dome and I retreat inside a room with Amara. She pulls out a package with cloths we're supposed to wear. There are leather jeans, a black inside shirt, a maroon red canvas shirt, a waterproof but thin black outdoors jacket, and combat boots.

Amara braids my hair in a ponytail. Then secures it with a black headband. Then just before I notice she places my golden barrette in my hair. Before I could object, she placed her fingers on my lips gesturing me not to talk. She smiles at me and I smile back. Before I leave a have a couple minutes to eat. So I dig into soup, bread, berries, and some steak. When I was done I drank a glass of water to keep it all down. Just then a voice comes and says, "30 seconds." I couldn't help but feel a little sick to my stomach. Amara smiles at me one last time as I enter the tube. Taking one last glance at the room and then being slowly converted up into mid air.

The arena was vast, with a wide plenty of forest across the horizon. To the left is a clear blue lake/stream and straight ahead is the tall grass valley. As the countdown from 50 begins I cross my eyes aiming for some knives in the cornucopia. I manage to find a set of knives 10 or so in a close reach next to the bow and arrows. Those I think, must be for Glimmer. "10, 9, 8, 7-" The speakers aloud began, it was just in my reach the knives. "6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1."

I run as fast as I can and once I get a reach of the knives I grab a backpack too. I see a boy from District 9 and throw the knife came into his stomach and made his mouth bleed. When he fell down, I saw her fire girl grabbing hold of an orange backpack trying to run at the sight of me. I throw aiming at her. She dodges with her backpack. I know I shouldn't throw anymore because I'll lose some more knives and I couldn't risk that. Then right from behind me comes another boy from District 7 I throw hitting him near the next and to my right was a girl from District 3 I throw again landing on her stomach and she collapses to the ground.

I see Marvel helping Glimmer off the ground and Cato in the Cornucopia pleasing himself with swords and spears. We all gather together and pack up remaining weapons in our backpacks stuffing everything together leaving behind nothing as we hunt down the other tributes and single them out.

We set off to the lake to gather water before sunset. The sky was now dark and the air had gotten much cooler. Just before we set the fire I noticed something. "Cato, fire." I whisper. "Hey c'mon!" He says to Marvel and Glimmer. When they see the fire they come with us to put it out. It was a girl from District 5. "Well, who wants to kill her first?" Cato says now getting her attention. "I will." Glimmer answers as the girl screams and the arrow goes through her. However there was no cannon. Then, a boy came out from the bushes. "I'll finish her." He said. "Well, isn't it lover boy." I say judgingly. "What are you going here?" Cato asked. "I was wondering if I couldn't help you find Katniss." He says. We all stare at him for a moment before Cato breaks off, "Ok then." Cato says not looking back. Then lover boy stabs the girl some more and finally the cannon is back.

"This way." Peeta said. "You sure?" Cato asked. "Ya, that was one of her snares over there." Peeta replies. "Better be." Cato says roughly. "Are you sure we shouldn't kill him now?" Glimmer asked Cato. "Nah, he's the only chance we got at finding her." He replies kissing her cheek.

We set up a campfire next to a big oak tree. We all go out and hunt for food. I was able to catch four frogs and two salamanders. Glimmer caught a bird, and Cato and Marvel went fishing. I didn't see what pointless thing lover boy was doing, probably crying as usual. By nightfall we roast the frogs, fish, salamanders, and birds in the fire. I devour the meat of the frog I caught enjoying its rich feel on my lips.

Marvel is first for lookout as the rest of us settle in our sleeping bags. I don't trust him. I sleep with my knives in my pocket and a knife in my hand in case of danger. But I can't sleep. I'm not use to the cold horrid weather in the games. No matter how hard I try I just keep thinking about Gem. I wonder if she's watching me pretending to sleep right now. The thought of that is even more horrid so I close my eyes tightly and enter a trance.

When morning finally came, I felt the gentle touch of the wind. I brace myself and leave my sleeping bag to only finding lover boy awake. The rest were sound asleep and probably getting hungry at the moment. I grab my knives and wait for game to come. When Glimmer was finally awake I had caught a few fish from the lake and collected some more water. The smell of the fish in the fire made my mouth water. I guess it did for Cato and Marvel too because they got up immediately when the food was done. We ate half of the fish saving the rest for our hunt to find more tributes to kill. I suppose the faster we win this game the faster we'll be to better food and sponsors.

"We should be getting ready to leave." Marvel says. "Ya, where's Cato and Glimmer?" I say. When Cato and Glimmer weren't by the lake, Marvel and I went looking for them. By no surprise I found them. With Marvel behind me we watch as they made out behind a pine tree. "You guys done?" I ask breaking them apart. Cato looks at us for a second then back at Glimmer and the look of embarrassment and shock on his face. Then he let go of Glimmer. "Let's go." He said abruptly.

We follow lover boy towards the East following the path of the stream. We follow the tide leading us to the grasslands and more trees. "Did you see the look on their faces when we caught them?" Marvel says coming up to me laughing. "Oh my god, they found us Cato what do we do now?" I say imitating Glimmer. We both laugh at the thought imitating more of what they probably thought when we caught them. On the outside I was happy as a raindrop but on the inside my soul was in deep, deep, misery.

"Another day's walk over to the forest and we'll find her." Lover boy says at nightfall. We had walked for what seemed like forever down the shoreline of the stream following lover boy leading the way. I still don't understand why he's helping us if he has a "crush" on this girl. I don't trust anyone it's official.

Glimmer is keeping watch as we sleep and this is a real scene because I've never seen her keep watch for anything besides if she gets a broken nail. By dawn, Glimmer has successfully kept watch and manage to pack up all our food supplies. We leave for another day of walking and no kills. Lover boy leads us to a path towards the shady forest saying that fire girl is close. To my surprise she was. Down by the water was fire girl washing her face not taking a glance at us. "Oh, there she is!" I yell. "I call killing her!" I say again. "No I'll do it!" Glimmer argues. Soon, we run after her towards trees and bushes. "She's trying to escape!" I yell.

I feel the tree leaves rush past my skin and the twigs poking my insides. But I don't stop running no matter what. Then I see her climbing up a tree only having a few seconds head start before Cato climbs up chasing her. "I'm gonna get you!" He says. Panting she climbs higher and me getting more mad. "GET HER CATO! KILL HER CATO!" I yell almost screaming. However with one wrong move Cato grabs onto an unstable branch and "CRACK!" he falls down from almost 10 feet from the air.
