Mika has to choose between being hunted for his wings or trusting a stranger. When he chooses the latter, has he made the right choice?

Winged Creature AU.

Mika's POV

Up and up and up. My wings carried me higher and higher. The breeze swept along my pale skin and through my bright hair welcoming me to the sky. I smiled breathing in the fresh air. Most people would have a hard time breathing this high up, but my lungs were accustomed to the thin air making it feel refreshing. The clouds danced so close to me, I could reach out and touch the cold mist if I tried.

A rustle in the bushes below made me freeze in place except for the steady flapping of my snow colored wings. I scanned the area trying to pinpoint what could have made the noise. My eyes weren't one of the weakest of my senses, so I couldn't make out anything out of the ordinary.

Just in case it hadn't been an animal, I decided to land. With a quick motion ,I dove towards the ground before spreading my wings to slow my momentum. My feet hit the grass with a thump. Folding my wings, I slowly walked towards where I first heard the noise to see what appeared to be a dark head of hair behind a bush in the distance. I ran over to it, but whatever it was had gone just as I made it there.

I hoped it wasn't a human. Just to be safe, though, I'd have to lay low and stay grounded for a while. I sighed in disappointment and decided to head back to the old barn I called home. It was once part of a farm, but it's been abandoned for quite some time. I would've preferred the house with it being insulated better, though half of it was collapsed. I could get in if I really wanted to, however it'd probably be best not to risk it.

I came up to the barn on the very edge of the forest. An open field that was probably once a field of crops lay on the other side. Using my wings to propel myself, I jumped through a window to get inside. If anyone ever did find this place, it would be best if there was no obvious traces of me living here such as an open door. Then, I might just have a chance at staying hidden.

Sighing, I made my way through the barn. The wooden boards creaked under my bare feet, and occasionally a stray piece of hay would crunch under them as well. I arrived at my food stash, and stared at the few berries I had left. In my hurry to get back, I had forgotten to collect more food. I groaned. I'd have to go back out, and I'd have to do it right now.

The chance that the possible human was back already was slim, and if I waited I could be driven out by hunger during the time the hunters arrived and were searching the area. I had no time to waste. I grabbed a basket I had made from tree bark and branches and raced back out through the window.

I scoured the area for anything edible. I picked apples and berries off trees and bushes. At one point, I ran into a rabbit. I felt bad, but I needed protein as well. In one quick motion, I crushed the poor thing with my wings. The white and gold feathers of my wings were tipped with the creature's blood. I placed the carcass in my basket with the other food I had collected. Out of respect, I placed a flower on the ground over the place of death.

I heard a snap behind, making me tense. This time I wasn't going to take risks by examining it. I flapped my wings and took off, bolting back to the old barn. I was sure whatever it was couldn't keep up with me, so I decided to just go straight to my shelter. Once there, I dropped the basket in the corner where I stashed my food and washed off my wigs using an old water pump. Then, I collapsed in a pile of hay nearby.

That flight and the constant scares had me tired out. Wrapping my wings around my body to keep warm, I got comfy on the makeshift bed of hay. I didn't want to let my guard down just yet, but I was slowly losing my grip on consciousness. I kept slipping and slipping until I let go all together, falling into the depths of slumber. My sleep was dreamless but peaceful.
