When I got to the school, my parents and I went to the principals office. He told us things we already knew that I was facing suspension, that what I did was stupid and reckless, blah, blah, blah. The school board sought it fit that I was temporarily suspended until Miss Emily said I was ready to go back to school. I was to see her every morning. I was just glad I wasn't expelled. That would have resulted in us moving without a second thought. No use in staying in a town where I can't go to the only high school.
The bell rang as we were walking toward the car. I caught George's scent as it blew behind me. I turned and saw him walking towards me. He stopped abruptly, not knowing if we could talk while my parents were there. I looked back to them, silently asking their permission. "We'll wait in the car," my mom said with a tight smile, dragging my dad with her. "Don't take too long," my dad said struggling to keep up with my mom.
I walked toward George, I caught a few people nearby staring at me and whispering.
"So what's the verdict?" he asked squaring his shoulders, as if bracing himself for the worst.
"Got temporary suspension, until Miss Emily says otherwise," I stuck my hands into the pocket of my jeans.
"Seriously? That's it?"
"Yeah. But what sucks most is that I have to come see Miss Emily every day, and I have to do my class work at home," I grumbled.
"Hey, you're still in school. I'd call that a win," he smiled. "What are you going to do?" a spark of concern entered my voice.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, being alone at school, until who knows when. It'll be lonely,"
"Nah, I'll adjust. Hopefully, your parents would at least let me come in the afternoons. And maybe help you withyour problems,
"Just come, the worst they can do is lock you outside," I smiled
"Are you sure? I think your dad would love the chance to have a go at me," He peered over my shoulder to nod at the car.
"I'll stop him," I looked over my own shoulder to smile. "Right," he sounded disbelieving
The bell rang again, and students started to walk to their next class.
"Guess I should go," his shoulders slumped.
"Yeah me too. I think my parents are three seconds away from honking," I smiled and that seemed to put him in a better mood. I hugged him, and in the middle of the hug my dad honked. Telling me, "Okay that's enough. Get in the car,"
We stepped away from our embrace and greeted each other with a "see you," and he walked off into the school. We drove into town to buy a few supplies to prepare for our new house guest.
My parents went to the only convenience store in town. I walked with them, trying to stop myself from showing the physical torture I was in. Shopping with my parents is hell. Even more than living with them. They went through every isle, looked at every product, and talked among themselves. I lasted 15 minutes, when I told my parents that I was going to walk around and see if there was anything I needed.
"Be careful and-"
"And I will come find you guys in 15 minutes to see if you're done," I said as I walked away.
I decided to go to the stationary isle to scout out any art supplies I might need for my project. As I was looking at a sketchbook, I heard footsteps coming toward me. I didn't pay much attention to the other person. I looked at another sketch book. While I bent over to take it out, the footsteps stopped beside me, and the persons scent filled my nose. I froze. What was he doing here?
"Hi Anna," the gruff voice said.
I stood up and turned around. "Hi Henry," I said with confidence.
"What are you doing here? Buying traps for children?" "No, I wanted to talk to you," he said indifferently. "About what? I'm sure you got the news that the Boss is dead," I crossed my arms, hoping it would hide my fear. "Yes, I did get it. But that's not what I wanted to talk to you about," He met my eyes.
"What then?" My voice shook just a little bit.
"I know what you and your family are," he whispered. "I don't know what you're talking about," I turned to walk away, but he stopped in front of me.
"I don't want to harm you. I want to warn you," he explained. "About what?"
"About the other hunters. I figured out pretty quickly what you are, other hunters will come and so will they.
You better watch your back girly. Not all hunters are as pretty as me, and they will be coming soon. I must warn you that Franklin was a treat compared to most of them," he said keeping his voice low and walked away as soon as he was done. I on the other hand stared at a shelf for 10 minutes.
I struggled to compile my composure again. Other hunters were going to threaten my family. A sensible person would tell her parents and run as far as they could. I decided to not do that and stay quiet. It was a big mistake I know, but this would only give my parents the reason they were looking for to move. The best is to stay silent and if a hunter comes knocking out on our door, I'd deal with them.
