I woke up an hour later when a nurse took my vitals and changed my IV.
I sat upright. The nurse gave me an apologetic smile and walked out.
"You should try to sleep some more," my mom said, concerned.
"No," I protested. I needed to do something. "You really should get some rest," My mom was becoming caring to much mom.
"Mom. I'm fine. Really. You should get some sleep. And don't say you don't need sleep. Anyone who isn't blind as a mole can see those circles under your eyes. Besides if you're worried someone will kidnap me again, don't. There are highly capable police officers outside of my door, and they change shifts every hour. No person in this town is as safe as I am right now," I explained. "We are not leaving you alone," my dad protested. "You don't have to. There is a couch in the corner. And you can take turns," I said firmly.
"Mary, you go sleep first," My dad said softly.
She wanted to protest but she let it go. She was obviously too sleep deprived. After five minutes she was passed out on the couch. My dad pulled another chair closer to my bed and looked at me with a scowl.
"What?" I asked leaning away from him. The scowl intensified, as my dad pulled his brows closer together in confusion.
"Dad, you're scowling at me," I tried to keep my tone light.
"Oh sorry," he said, and his forehead smoothed out with only a trace of the scowl still there. He looked at the door and back at me, "How did you know the guard changed shifts every hour?" my dad asked as the scowl came back.
"Someone must have told me," I lied.
He gave me the you're-not-fooling-me look. "Ok, ok. I could hear them when they change shifts," I fessed up. My dad's eyes widened in disbelief. "You're wishing I stayed with the lie?" I took a sip of water.
He shook his head, "No," he pulled closer to my bed lowering his voice, "How?"
I sighed, I knew this was bound to happen.
"Well, one of the guys who kidnapped me cast some sort of spell on me, that triggered the change. I don't know if it was the spell, or just my body trying to protect itself from danger," I took a big gulp of water as the memories flooded back. My dad's scowl went from curious to a furious.
"Dad don't even think about it," I warned.
"What-"
"You're thinking about tracking the bastard down and making him pay. Don't," I explained before he could ask. "He should pay. That is-" his anger rendered him speechless. I could smell his fury and took his hand, "It's ok dad. I'm fine," I lied. I was not fine. After enduring all those hours of torture left its mark and not a physical one. "That is something you shouldnt go through alone and definitely not on a day that isn't a full moon," he whispered, trying to keep his voice low enough for the police officers not to hear him.
"I wasn't alone," I tried to sound casual, but my voice betrayed me.
"What?" his voice raising a few octaves.
"Shh," I gave him a look and pointed to my mom who stirred a bit but remained asleep.
"One of the guys who kidnapped me, well he helped me," I whispered stopping there. Not wanting to explain it further.
"Ok that is one less man to hurt," my dad thought aloud softly.
I rolled my eyes. 'My dad and vengeance' I thought to myself. "So what did you do to stop it?" my dad got back onto the topic at hand.
