ACT III

MJ looked out at the sparkle of the crowd, the sparkle of her gown against her skin, the sparkle of Harry's smile as it flashed at her. But for all the sparkle in the room, the stars didn't seem to shine as bright that night. Tonight...that was apparently supposed to be up to her.

She wore a black plunging dress, baring too much of her skin. The see through fabric traveled dangerously up in a slit to the top of her thigh, under a delicate criss cross of diamonds embedded on the fabric that also covered the way the dress plunged down her chest to her navel.

Her hair loose and pulling in thick curls to the middle of her back, and diamond bracelets lining their way up her arms. Yet, in certain strikes of light...the criss cross pattern on the dress reminded her of something.

Wryly, she thought to herself, does he even realize it looks like webs?

And what a web she was caught in.

Harry had held her arm as they walked through the pulsing crowds waiting to get in, a dark knight with his dark queen.

He had decided to make the party tonight a masquerade, in honor of the crime fighting celebrity that MJ had told him about.

He had wickedly said to her earlier that day, Maybe he'll feel like he fits right in and surprise us with an appearance...

She wouldn't hold her breath.

MJ's own mask resembled a white rabbit, while Harry's was a black cat. They were like Ying and Yang.

As they walked back into the waiting arms of The Monarch, MJ peered up into the sky where the fluorescent green light of the sign shone down on them.. A club with a title for a king, but the logo of a court jester.

Harry picked the logo for his club because as much as he thought himself a king, it was good to remember that life was nothing but a joke in reality.

Tonight he was planning on unveiling a special project that he and Wilson Fisk had been working together closely on. A new revolutionary technology that was supposed to help make the city safer.

MJ had just spent her time listening to it all in a haze. That's all the last few days had been with him, a haze. She missed Ned....but wasn't ready to face reality. So she had stayed cocooned in Harry's world.

From that night in the elevator a few days ago, he had taken her up to his room, but it wasn't until the minute they crashed into his goose feather mattress that they really decided to bare themselves to each other.

She remembered the way his eyes had gleamed across her in the dark as they laid next to each other, his hands playing carelessly in her hair. Her own dark eyes gazing back, asking quiet questions...

Tell me something you've never told anyone...she whispered.

They stayed up exchanging words instead of kisses. This ever evolving territory between the two of them was so confusing. Was it that they wanted each other? Or they just both wanted something to hold on to?

Harry told her more about how he had turned to Fisk, simply because his own father had been absent and avoidant of any sort of involvement with his own son, assuming he was weak and amounted to nothing.
