The room lit up with Luca's never-ending jokes, and I felt my cheeks ache from laughing so hard.
It had been a while since I laughed like that. But what truly warmed my heart was seeing Mom smile—really smile—with no trace of worry in her eyes.
Then came a voice that broke the bubble of our little world.
"Hello, everyone."
Doctor Harry strolled into the room, his calm presence slicing gently through the laughter.
"Hi, Harry," Mom greeted quickly, her voice just a bit too cheerful, her smile a little too wide.
Luca and I exchanged a glance, eyebrows raised. That smile was... suspicious.
Doctor Harry made his way to her bed, reaching for her wrist to check her pulse with his thumb.
"How are you feeling, Maeve?"
"Ooh, first-name basis," Luca blurted out, earning a sharp glare from Mom. I couldn't help but snicker.
She stretched her arm out to smack him, but Luca jumped away just in time, grinning. Even Doctor Harry chuckled, which only deepened the blush rising on Mom's face.
"Are you here to chase us away, Doc?" I asked, smirking.
He looked at me and shook his head with a warm smile.
"Of course not. I just came to check on her and give her vitamins. Do you mind helping?"
"Not at all, she's my mom after all," I said, casting a soft smile in Mom's direction. She returned it, eyes gentle.
While he went about his check-up, Luca and I stood with our arms folded, watching like protective hawks.
We didn't miss the small glances exchanged between the two of them—the kind that said more than words ever could.
"Okay, I'll be leaving now," he said after a while, "but I'll have to chase you two off soon. It'll be time for her nap."
Mom immediately pouted, about to protest, but he raised a brow—challenge accepted, no words needed.
"You know you can't argue about that, Maeve," he added with a teasing sternness before turning to us with a smile. "I'll go now."
We nodded, watching him leave. The moment the door shut behind him, I decided to poke the bear.
"Hey," I said, studying my nails like they were the most fascinating things in the room, "don't you think Doctor Harry is kind of handsome?"
"If I were gay, I'd definitely go for him," Luca said with zero hesitation.
I wasn't even looking, but I could feel Mom glaring at us—and blushing.
"Mom, how old is Doctor Harry—?" I didn't get to finish before two pillows came flying at us from the bed.
