He led us to our reserved seat and pulled a chair out for me, and I thanked him. I used the opportunity to glance around the exquisite hall and was impressed by its cobalt blue and white theme.
The ceremony began, and soon, appetisers were served. The sight of the apple pie had my stomach rumbling, and I couldn't help but wonder what the main course would be like.
"Here, I forgot to give you this."
I looked up from my food and saw him holding out a black mask.
"What's it for?"
"For the dance."
I nodded and took it from him. Great—at least Raul wouldn't recognize me.

I was physically present, but my mind wasn't at the party at all. I kept glancing around, hoping to catch a glimpse of him.
A familiar blonde walked in, and for a second, I expected to see him beside her, but to my greatest disappointment, she came alone.
The long mermaid-tail white dress hugged her slim figure, with sleeveless straps and a deep cut at the middle that revealed her pale cleavage, a gold necklace resting perfectly on her chest.
Her blonde hair was slicked into a perfect ponytail, and her thin lips popped brightly from the red lipstick coating them.
She smiled at the cameras, waving like royalty as she strutted in. Her eyes scanned the room, and when they landed on us, her smile faltered.
I knew it was because of me, but I couldn't care less, because the feeling was mutual. She forced a small fake smile and began heading in our direction.
"Nicko," she called as she drew closer.
He looked up and gave her a polite smile. Standing, he welcomed her with a hug.
"When did you get back? You didn't even tell me," she pouted, her expression twisting into a slight frown.
"I'm sorry, sister-in-law. I was kinda busy, so I couldn't call."
She nodded with a small smile, but the moment her eyes met mine, the smile disappeared—replaced by a sharp glare.
"And why are you here?" She gritted out, giving me a malicious once-over.
"Hello, Mrs. D'Amano," I replied with a fake smile, resisting the urge to roll my eyes.
"That's not the answer to my question, slut. What are..."
Before I could even get the chance to snap at her, Nikolai did it for me.
"Catalina," Nikolai called firmly, stepping between her and me to block her from coming any closer.
"Let me, Nicko. I need to teach this bitch a lesson. You think I—"
"What do you want to say, Catalina? That I'm your husband's slut?" I scoffed and rolled my eyes.
