"Grandad, can you tell me a bedtime story?" said the young voice of Pete.

"Of course, my child," Pete's grandfather said, sitting on the edge of his bed. A smile spread across Pete's face as he settled into his warm bedsheets.

"Which story do you want me to tell you tonight?"

Pete's eyes wandered around the room as he considered the question, until his eyes lit up and he looked at his grandfather.

"Tell me that story that you used to tell me, the one of the girl and the boy."

"Ah yes, that story. My favourite story in fact!" his grandfather chuckled. "Now let me think for a second, because it has been a while since I have told that story...Ah, yes, I remember. Now, are you all settled in?"

"Yes!" Pete giggled.

"Ok," his grandad grinned.

"It all started one afternoon, when a young boy was walking around the streets with his two friends. Outside one of the houses they passed stood a young girl watering the plants in her garden, who looked around the same age as the young boy. The young boy noticed her and couldn't believe how beautiful she was. Her light brown hair was in a pixie cut, and her skin was slightly tanned. The girl looked up to see the boy and their eyes met; her eyes were a lively, bright blue colour. She gave the young boy a smile, and he managed to send her back a crooked smile. She then looked back to water the plants and the young boy only then realised that he was staring, and so he looked across to his friends to see if they had noticed the girl or if they had noticed his staring; in which they hadn't. The young boy let out a sigh of relief and smiled.

"A few days later, the boy walked by the girl's house again; this time alone. He hadn't stopped thinking about the other day when she smiled at him, and how beautiful she looked. So this time he was really hoping he could start a conversation with her. And, yet again, she was outside, watering the plants. The young boy walked up and said hello to her. She looked up at him and said hi back, and she asked if he was the boy she saw the other day. He smiled and said yes. He was ecstatic that she had remembered him.

"The young boy went to visit the girl almost every day, and after a few weeks the boy brought up enough courage to ask the girl on a date. He was overjoyed when she agreed to go out with him, so a few days later the two of them went on a date to the cinemas. The boy was so nervous about it but it turned out really well. During the movie, the girl accidentally touched the boy's hand, making her blush. The boy noticed, and so he held out his hand so that she could take it - and her hand slipped into his. Near the end of the movie the boy looked at the girl and she looked at him. He felt a real connection with her at that time and went for it, even though he wasn't sure of her reaction. He kissed her, and lucky for him she kissed him back happily. It was only delicate, only lasting a few seconds, but it was magical.

"Only a year later, the boy decided to take her out to the city just for the night as she had never been to the city before. She was amazed by all the lights and the tall buildings, and the boy was just admiring her amazement. The girl took the boy up to the top of the tallest building - even though the boy was afraid of heights, she made him feel safe. On the top of the building, he came up behind her and held her waist as she looked at the beautiful view. The boy rested his head on her shoulder, kissed her cheek and for the first time, whispered 'I love you', and without hesitation the girl whispered back, 'I love you too'.

"Four years later, the boy took the girl to the city again. He took her to the top of the tallest tower, where they first said they loved each other, and he got down on one knee. He told her how much she had changed his life and how happy she made him feel, and simply asked her to marry him. The girl, with tears in her eyes and a wide smile on her face, said yes.

"The next year they got married in Spring. The young boy stared into her beautiful, bright blue eyes and proudly said 'I do'. He wouldn't have changed a thing.

"Only two years later came their first child, another two years later came their second child, and in another two years came their third child. The boy was so proud of his children and was so happy being with his wife.

"It didn't feel like long but soon enough it had been almost twenty years since their third child, and by then all the children had grown up and moved out; leaving the boy and the girl alone once more. They enjoyed their time together and took time to travel and experience the world together.

"However, it was another ten years later, on a dark and stormy night, when the girl was rushed to the hospital. The girl was in lots of pain and the boy couldn't stand seeing her like this. He waited every day and every night for the tests to come back with an answer as to why her wife was so sick, and one night it finally came back. A nurse came up to him. 'It's come back again,' she told him, 'and it's worse than ever'. His heart sunk.

"It was only a few weeks after that night they shared their last 'I love you's'. She finally closed her eyes, her hand still in his."

Pete's grandfather wiped away a single tear rolling down his cheek and looked at his grandson, giving him a smile.

"So the message from that story," Pete's grandfather added. "Is that you should really make the most of life because it slips away so quickly, Pete." Pete looked up at his grandfather with slightly drooping eyes.

"Do you promise me, Pete, that you will make the most of your life?" Pete's grandfather asked him. Pete looked into his grandfather's eyes and promised to stand by his grandfather's words.

"Ok," his grandfather smiled. "Goodnight, Pete"

"Goodnight, Grandad," Pete smiled as he closed his eyes.

Pete's grandfather beamed at him then got up and walked out of the room, turning off the lights as he did. He walked into his own bedroom where his bed made for two was sitting. He changed into his pyjamas and slipped into his side of the bed.

He looked at his bedside table where there sit a picture frame. Inside the picture frame was an old photo of a young lady and a man. The girl had light brown hair cut into a pixie cut, with lightly tanned skin. Her bright blue eyes were staring into the man's, who had short black hair and dark green eyes, also with lightly tanned skin.

Pete's grandfather moved his eyes to the weddings rings on the hands of both people in the photo, and he noticed the man's wide golden ring with dots on it.

The dark green eyes of Pete's grandfather moved to his hand, where on his ring finger sat a wide golden ring with dots.

"And I'll tell you what, Pete," he whispered with a smile.

"I wasn't expecting that."

Posting again tomorrow :)
