Ellas fourteenth birthday was right around the corner and naturally a girl that age wanted a party. This year however was different because for the first time ever, she did not just invite girls. But also boys.
Ella had joined the drama club last year and made a lot of new friends there. Jennie and Lisa heard about them almost on a daily basis. Ella was a very sociable person. Just like Jennie had been at that age.
Jennie had tried hard not to react when Ella listed off the names of the people she wanted to invite to her birthday. There were at least like four or five boys.
The young mother had gotten used to Daniel who Ella befriended on her very first day of school. She even knew Daniel's father. Another single parent in Ella's class and that kind of made him an ally. He had asked Jennie out once but she had let him down very gently because she didn't think it would be such a good idea. Plus, she hadn't felt any attraction towards him at all.
After Jennie and Lisa had picked Ella up from school together for the first time back in january, Daniel's father had come up to her the very next day.
-flashback-
"You and your girlfriend make a really nice couple."
Jennie turned her head towards the voice. "Oh hey." She was faced with Daniel's dad. "Uhm... thanks..."
She tried to think back to the day before when he had probably seen her with Lisa but Jennie didn't recall them doing anything remotely couply.
"Uhm, how did you know she's my... girlfriend?" She asked the man and felt her cheeks heat up slightly. She wasn't used to discussing her love life outside of her small circle of friends.
"Oh, Ella told Daniel and well..." He looked a bit sheepish. "I'm so sorry. Am I not supposed to know?"
Jennie shook her head, inwardly rolling her eyes at her blabbermouth of a daughter. But she couldn't really blame Ella. Ella was super fond of Lisa. Lisa was part of their family now and Jennie had raised Ella with the concept that it was completely normal for some women to love other women. But Jennie wasn't sure if Ella was aware that not everybody on this planet was tolerant and open-minded about this.
Nevertheless, Daniel's father seemed to be taking it quite well that Jennie was involved with another woman. Otherwise he never would have opened a conversation about it.
"No, no, don't worry. It's alright. We're not hiding or anything." Jennie eased his worry with a timid smile. "It's just... still kind of new."
"Hey... uhm..." He stepped from one foot to the other nervously. "I'm sorry I put you into an uncomfortable situation last year, but... I didn't know."
What the fuck was he on about? Jennie tilted her head confused, making him awkwardly elaborate. "You know, I would have never asked you out, consequently making you reject me if I had known."
Aaaaaah. The light went on in Jennie's head. Now he thought she rejected him last year because she's a lesbian. Which wasn't entirely true. Jennie rejected him because he wasn't her type.
However the young mother had no energy to discuss her sexuality outside of her kid's school, waiting for Ella to finally come out, so she just sent him an easy smile. "It's alright. Don't worry about it."
"You do look really good together. She's not korean though, is she?" He just wouldn't shut up and Jennie unconsciously started shooting glances at her watch. When was this freaking school day over!?
"Thanks. Um, no, she's Thai. Has lived here half her life though."
"Oh wow, that's so interesting. What's her name?"
