and hunter was going back to school again.

he boarded the bus, clutching the straps of his new bag. he looked down at his feet, murmuring a hello to the bus driver, miss carolle, and sitting in his newly assigned seat. he took off his bag and tossed it on the seat , before scooting past it and leaning their head against the window.

'hi again!' greeted a cheery voice at the next stop, and hunter looked up, surprised. was the voice directed to him? yes, it was, he realized when they locked eyes with luz, the girl from the day before. ' ...oh, its you.' he said softly. 'yup! me again!' hunter hugged himself, trying to muster up a glare. 'why do you keep talking to me? it's not like-' he began. 'because i wanna be your friend,' she said. hunter blinked and registered her sentence, before looking up at her in surprise. 'friend?' he asked. luz nodded. 'was that not obvious?' she asked.

'sorry, its just... my only friends are... um, edric. wh-edric blight . i have another friend, its just-' hunter stammered, but luz cut him off. 'oh, i know ed! his sister is one of my best friends.' she said happily, and hunter swore he saw a very faint tint of rouge growing on luz's cheeks.

'...is it amity?' he asked. '...uh, yeah.' luz smiled. 'so, did i ever get your name?'

hunter stayed silent, narrowing his eyes. luz stared back at him, smiling, awaiting his answer. '...oooookaaay,' she said, and the bus stopped and every student got off. last step, but somebody caught him when he fell. looking up, hunter realized that it was the one and only edric.

'oh, hi edric,' hunter stammered, stabilizing themselves. edric smirked and let go of hunter, although since hunter staggered a small bit, edric put his hand on the smaller boy's shoulder to help balance him.

'let's go,' edric suggested. '...you got a new uniform?' hunter asked. 'yeah! now im optical illusions, potions, and beastkeeping,' he grinned proudly, then it faltered. '...sorry about yesterday. my mom can be terrifying, especially when she doesnt mean to.' edric said, and hunter shook his head. 'no no, its fine, but maybe next time...dont make me jump out a window from, uh , two stories high?' hunter asked, and edric snickered. 'yeah, sorry about that.'

edric patted hunter on the back, and when he spotted his little sister he ran over to her, immediately starting to tease her from the looks of her red face. hunter then felt the presence of somebody, who stood beside him to reveal herself as luz . hunter glanced at her, and she returned the glance. '...my name is hunter.' he murmured, and she grinned. 'nice name,' luz said, smacking them on the back, and he yelped with surprise, smacking her hand away. 'okay, okay, i get it, no physical contact. understandable,'

hunter spent a lot of time with edric, but unfortunately they had multiple classes without him, such as sculpture and fortune-telling, where he endured some teasing and rude or snarky remarks about his appearance, but edric would always send back a sassy and clever note back in optical illusions, potions, and beastkeeping. sometimes edric would sneak a text to hunter via phone, but hunter couldnt dare to send any back, and he would instantly start chatting to edric as soon as they saw him.

the clock ticked by, signaling that lunch time was approaching. as soon as the bell rang, hunter flinched but got out of his seat along with the other kids, most of whom getting out lunchkits from backpacks or bags.
