She is an angel of death so to speak. She is a creature of the deep that lures innocents to their deaths; it is her job.
She has no name and does not have thoughts. She perches on a rock and waits until her next victim sails by and then she kills them.
She is a beauty with long, golden hair which cascades down her back and luscious, red lips. She has a human torso but the tail of a fish which is obscured by the constant froth of the sea as it laps against her throne.
Her eyes are demonic, pure silver irises and absent of pupils, they are the last thing her prey sees before they are taken.
Every day she waits until she spies the mast of a proud ship, she flicks a finger and conjures a whirlpool, a swirling vortex to claim the lives of all who enter it. She opens her mouth and starts to sing.
Her haunting melody slices through the fog and enchants every man who hears it, their conscience is stolen and their ship abandoned as they are pulled towards her. They cannot locate the sound of the melody but they cannot stop trying.
They hit the whirlpool but the danger does not register. The last thing they see is two silver orbs in the distance before they are swallowed whole and delivered to her master; Sir Davy Jones himself.
It is another gloomy day; the sky is shrouded in a blanket of dull stratus clouds. In the distance she spies a light a soft, yellow glow. She can sense their vitality, there are seven men aboard and she will take them all…
The ship comes into view; it ploughs forward relentlessly and refuses to yield to the fog. She opens her mouth and begins to sing. She begins quietly but it is enough to drown out the sound of the crashing waves. She flicks a finger and a masterpiece appears, by the time the humans see the whirlpool they will already be ensnared.
The ship is looming towards her and she sings louder her voice rising to a crescendo, her melody has already reached the sailors and one by one they are looking around to try and find her. The captain is no longer drumming his fingers against the helm, he is staring into space like the rest of his crew, her mouth curves upwards into a smile; she is satisfied with her work.
Then she sees him a sailor who is unaffected by the power of her voice. He has heard the tales of the beast lurking in the murky waters and he has been warned about Death’s mistress, the creature who lures sailors to their death. He has plugged his ears with yellow sponge and for now he is safe, he is working to avoid the swirling vortex which will claim him.
Infuriated she sings louder but he still cannot hear her. She watches as he fails and the ship is dragged under the water, but he has escaped. He has jumped from the ship and now he swims hard and fast away from the whirlpool, it has not yet taken him; he is a sole survivor.
She gazes upon his tanned arms as they pump the strokes which will save his life, she watches his face, he is angry and hurt but will not give up. He is determined to save himself. She cannot do anything now. He is beginning to tire and for the first time she feels and is released from her torment.
She no longer wishes to kill she wants to save. She stops singing and dives into the vast ocean; she banishes the whirlpool and places her arms around her man. He does not fight her, for he is so delirious and she is so light that he believes that it is the current which is carrying him to safety.
She swims to shore and lays him on a beach where he will be safe. He is exhausted and cannot comprehend what he is seeing but it doesn’t matter. She presses on his chest and water trickles from his mouth, he will live and the last thing he will remember is two silver orbs.
Her master is enraged at her betrayal and she waits for her punishment. Nothing happens and she exhales a sigh of relief, for a split second she dares to hope that she is free from this curse, but then pain racks her body and she screams.
Then she is gone. She is no longer a creature but is foam; she will never sing again but will dance on the waves until the end of time.
