A/N: This idea is based around the idea of Greek Mythology, please bear in mind that this story is a work of fiction and therefore will not just stick to the facts

They were “The Moirai” the three wizened old women who shared one eye. They were the thin boundary between the glorious realm of the living and the shadowy world of the dead and were commonly known as “The Three Fates.”

In the world of the Ancient Greece it was believed that everyone had a specific time when they would die, that their whole life was mapped out for them and when their time was up the three fates would stretch out their thread of life and cut it, severing their victims connection to the human realm, then the persons soul would enter the Underworld where it was claimed by Hades; the Lord of the Underworld himself.

For The Three Fates it was a regular day, they had busied themselves arguing over whose turn it was to have their eye when a shadow loomed towards them. Each sister stopped squabbling and smiled in anticipation. It was rare for Hades to visit them and that meant that their next victim was a very special one.

“Greetings Moirai” he spoke in a dark voice.

“To whom do we owe this please?” asked the first sister in a mocking tone.

“You never pay us visits like you used to, could it be that you tire of us in our old age?” pouted the second sister.

The third remained deadly silent and cocked her head. She had control over the eye and she could see their master’s eyes darken, she was the wisest of the sisters and knew that whatever request he had was going to be a very important one.

“There is a certain being who is supposed to live longer than any of us, if we do not act soon then he could claim all of us, we would be ruined,” replied the lord quietly.

“Could it be…” started the first sister.

“It couldn’t,” argued the second sister.

“It is,” replied the third sister.

“Zeus’s child is growing quickly; I want you to annihilate Heracles,” ordered Hades.

The three sisters gasped in unison, for the Lord of the Underworld to ask them to commit such a deed, it was dangerous, it was unheard of, it was impossible.

“But he is immortal!” gasped the first sister once she had regained her composure.

Hades grinned his black gums stretched tight across his teeth.

“It is not impossible, he is currently mortal but not for long, I need him dead, Hera has sworn protection to you, she despises the child,” he replied.

The three sisters looked at one another, although they could not see one another, each of them knew exactly what the others were thinking.

This is a huge risk, we could anger Zeus, but if we fail to commit the deed the Hades’ wrath will be much worse.

“It could be interesting, after all we tire of reaping the same old mortal souls, to be able to claim the life of a demi god…” started the first sister.

“It would be a miracle, it’s just the thing we need to inject some excitement into our existence,” continued the second sister.

“We’ll do it,” agreed the third sister.

And so the three Fates decided that for once they were going to go against their purpose and for the first time they wouldn’t just take a life, they would steal it.

At first the sisters were afraid but Hera in her jealousy had sworn protection, she had promised to distract Zeus long enough the The three fates could commit the deed and it would appear to be an accident.

Finally the day came where the three sisters would could Heracles’ thread of life he would die a mortal before he would become a God.

Hera had sent Heracles on an errand. The “Golden boy” as he was referred to jumped at the chance to please his stepmother and had promptly dashed to the lake where he would collect some water lilies.

The three sisters waited, each taking turns with the eye and focusing intently on the boy, they waited until he was waist deep into the water, the first sister stretched out his thread of life, the second sister held the eye in front of the their sister so she would see what she was doing. The third sister slipped her fingers into her scissors and snapped them open.

She edged towards the thread until the thread was between each blade, the widened the blade and then began to cut…

“Watch it!” called the first sister.

The second sister had dropped the eye and in her haste the third sister had almost sank her scissors into the first sister’s jaw.

Enraged the first sister had dropped the thread and had screamed at her sister.

There was a rumble from beneath their cave and the third sister knew that their master was losing his temper, they had a job to do and they were screwing it up.

“Quick grab the eye, and stretch the thread,” hissed the third.

The first sister stretched out the thread, the second groped in the darkness for their eyeball, she smiled gleefully as she felt it and held it up like a torch towards her third sisters face.

The third sisters open the scissors for the second time and leaned towards the thread. Finally she snapped close the scissors and waited for the thread to be cut…

There was a loud clanging noise, as metal clashed with metal. The previously silver thread now illuminated the cave with its golden luminosity.

They were too late.

There was a huge roaring sound and the cave began to shake. The three sisters clung to one another in fear as the sound drew closer, until there in the pale light stood Zeus.

His golden face was purple with rage, his mouth set into a tight line.

“What is the meaning of this!” he thundered.

The Three Fates quivered in fear but none of them spoke.

Zeus reached into the air and from his fingers the fates could see three bronze lines shining in the gloom. It was their life span which he held in the dark.

He waved his hand and conjured a pair of scissors from lightening, in one fell slice he severed the three threads and from that moment the three fates ceased to be.

It is said that those three creatures were sent to the underworld where Cerberus, Hades’ faithful hellhound brought them to him.

From that moment on they faced his eternal wrath, for what goes around comes around…
