Violet breathed heavily, trying in vain to open the door. I was hoping that she had a plan to escape, but after noting her actions, I doubted that she'd have a plan.

My heart pounded in my ears. Chief Petrov was getting even closer to us and he wasn't going any faster. He was delaying it, savouring our fear.

Alan, Violet said in my mind. I'll distract him, you run. You need to get to the window and open it.

Okay, I thought, panting heavily. Do the countdown.

Three, two, one. RUN!

I dashed off, running as fast as I could. My movement was so sudden that Chief Petrov made a noise of surprise. He hadn't expected me to even try to escape. Come on man, I'm better than that, I thought.

I pumped my arms faster as I heard his footsteps thudding after me. "Come back, child!" He shrieked. We were so lucky that this was a large room. I didn't even want to think of what would happen if we had been trapped in a small room with no windows...

He was getting even closer now. I ran harder than I'd ever run before, gasping for breath, my lungs exploding. He reached out and he was about to grab onto my clothes when he let out a shriek. Chief Petrov stopped and looked around, horrified. He clutched at his foot, jumping around and shrieking in horror. It was probably Violet's doing. She had always been good at the self-defence classes she took when she was in School. I pulled the window open, grateful for the distraction. It was not too high for me to reach - it was at head height. The window squealed and I pulled harder. I bet no one ever opened this window. I blocked out all of the terrible sounds that the Chief was making. I focused on my task, putting all of my strength into it.

When the window finally shifted upwards, I did a mini victory dance. I quickly glanced over at the Chief and his eyes had become blank. Violet hovered near him, waving her arms and muttering under her breath. From afar, she looked like a young sorceress. It scared me and I would probably never admit that to her.

"I'm done!" I called my sister. She glanced at me, and the window. Good job, she projected, still while muttering. I'm coming over now. I can't speak right now, otherwise, I'll break Chief Petrov's trance. Also, I think he has a weapon. A blade of some sort.

She hurried over and I let her climb out of the window first. "Be careful," I reminded her.

When I heard the thump of her landing, I looked out of the window. "Are you alright?" I asked.

Violet projected her voice into my mind. I'm fine! Quickly get out. I don't know how much longer I can keep this going. Don't waste your time.

I hoisted myself up onto the windowsill, grateful that I had a somewhat athletic form. A noise made me turn my head around. Fear filled me as I saw Chief Petrov stumbling towards the window, his arms out like a zombie. One hand gripped a blade, true to Violet's word. "Come....b-back. I will get you," he slurred.

I tried to jump out of the window, but my jacket was stuck in the window ledge. I pulled as hard as I could. It still didn't come out.

Leave it! We have to go now!

I slipped out of my jacket and jumped out. It wasn't much of a jump as the building only had one level. Violet held my arm to steady me. The Chief's head poked out of the window, his arm reaching out with the blade. "Get back here, children!" He said slowly, showing his yellowing teeth. "I'm coming to get you!" He started to climb out of the window.

Violet strode forward and with all her strength, yanked the window down on the Chief's neck. I saw the moment he realised she was coming, and it was too late. His neck cracked and his head hung at a strange angle from the window. Blood dripped, down into the bushes below. His glassy eyes were unfocused, his empty hand dangling. He had dropped his blade onto the ground. There was no way that he was alive...

Only then did I realise what we had done. We'd committed a huge crime. If anyone found out, it was game over for us. The penalty for crimes by adolescents was so severe that I didn't even want to think of it. Even worse, I was standing in front of a dead person. A person who Violet had just killed. Oh my god ohmygodohmygodohmygod-

"Alan, what are you waiting for? He's dead."

I turned around to stare at her, my eyes wide. "You just killed a man!"

"I am fully aware of my actions. But it was the only choice. He would have come after us and killed us eventually. Now we must go before anyone sees us here."

My jaw dropped and I was speechless. "Fine. I'll talk to you when we get home."

We set off, running towards our home. I looked back at Violet, her expressionless face focused ahead of her. She had changed. Violet used to have a heart, but she slowly lost it after our parents were taken.

I was scared. Scared for my life, scared of Violet and scared of the Government.
