It was mid 1800's. During this time, arranged marriages were the normal. However, Tsuchigomori was always against them, since neither of the people getting married had a choice or say in it.  He was at the dark wooden table studying in his dimly candle-lit room. The candle flame burned surrounding the room in a weak warm shine. Even if it was dark, it was perfect for Tsuchigomori to see his book.

However in this time, not many people were learning, Tsuchigomori always loved learning and discovering new things, hence why he basically begged his parents to go to school. Everyone in his area was poor right now, so another bonus to him being in school is that he could hopefully get a good job to help his family. However, his parents had different plans.

In a moment of desperation, Tsuchigomori's parents are planning to marry him off to a rich family's daughter. Tsuchigomori doesn't know about this, but he will soon discover his fate.

The next day

Tsuchigomori sat up slightly on his tatami, stretching as the morning sun peaked through. He then realized that he had left the candle on and wax was all over his table and quicly blew out the candle. The melted wax which was now solid since it settled down made a mess on the table and dripped onto the floor.

Tsuchigomori got changed and went out of his room and kneeled down and started eating his breakfast when he noticed his mother walk into the room. "Er, Ryūjirou.." "Yes, mother?" she hesitated a bit to answer but then blurted out "Your going to get married. Next week and you have to go meet them today after breakfast" Tsuchigomori just stopped eating as his eyes widened a bit in shock.

Tsuchigomori was eating his food slowly, still in shock then after, him and his parents started walking there. It was a bit far, but he could handle that walking distance and get there soon. "Why?" he thought, he didn't want to get married to someone he doesn't even know.

In around 30 minutes, they finally arrived there. It was a giant minka house which made Tsuchigomori's eyes widen a bit as he looked up in awe at the house.

lets say the house looks something like this bc idk how to describe places very well

Tsuchigomori followed his parents inside and there was Yako's parents and they greeted each other. The inside was spacious and looked even nicer than the outside.

In another room, Yako sat there. She was kneeling down, facing a table with a small thick cloth placed over it as she dipped her brush in the dyes and painted on it. She used the brush to pick up the pasty dye as she stroked her brush on the fabric.

She rubbed the brush against the fabric, staining it with the bright colored dye. Yako didn't often paint, but she liked doing it when she felt alone. She won't admit it that she's always alone though, but she doesn't paint. Usually, all of her paintings ended up collecting dust in the corner  of her room with the clothes.

She didn't expect herself to be famous for painting or earn a lot, she didn't enjoy it much, but she did it to pass the time. Yako didn't have anything to do since she had nobody to talk to and nowhere to go, and nothing to do even with all these fortunes.

The painting was almost done by now, since it was just small and not as detailed as others. Yako already knew about the arranged marriage, hence why she was painting. She knew that she didn't want to get married to him, but there's nothing she could do in it as her parents are the ones that decide everything.

She stroke her brush against the fabric, one last time as she ended it. While waiting for it to finish drying, she picked up the dyes and tools and quickly stored them away. She layed the painting next to the window so that it could dry faster in the sun. She walked out of the room and that's when she saw him, sitting there, waiting for something.

They both noticed each other, not knowing what to do. "Should I say hi? Who's that?" they both thought their  questions curiously.

Finally, Yako broke the silence. "Hi... Uh, who are you?" "Ah.. I'm Tsuchigomori Ryūjirou"

"Oh so this is the guy I was supposed to marry... Atleast he's not old" she thought to herself in relief.

Yako walked over to him and sat beside him. She didn't know why she did that or what to do. They just both sat there silently not saying anything. But pretty soon, they started talking.

"Do you have any siblings?" "No.. what about you?" "I can say the same" they started asking each other questions to pass the time and to get to know each other, as they're going to be married in a week better now than never.

"Maybe this wouldn't be that bad after all"

Yako thought, being glad that she would marry him. She closed her eyes slowly and took a few deep breaths. Tsuchigomori held her shoulder and shaked it a little thinking that she fell asleep and thats when she opened her eyes "Oh.. I thought you were asleep" "I was just taking a few deep breaths"

They were both very very embarrassed, not knowing how to continue.
