Aegon Targaryen

Tea with the Queen, her eldest son, and his wife was nearly a monthly tradition for me. We would gather in Queen Alicent's chambers and sit around a small table, drinking tea and discussing current events. Normally, it would only be myself and the Queen speaking, though. Helaena would enter the conversation whenever she saw fit, but that was normally just at the mention of any sort of food or the occasional scandalous rumor.

I wore a dark, floral patterned gown, which fit in well with the others' deep greens. I sat down beside Alicent and Helaena, across the table from Aegon as I always was. He had an astonishingly bored looking expression on his face, which was also a regular thing. He insisted on having wine instead of tea at one of the earlier meetings, though all that earned him was a murderous look from his mother. Aegon stared down at the small teacup that sat beside him, his gaze going still. This boredom was extremely short lived, though.

"I'd like to begin today's time with a direct rumor," Alicent said once we had all sat down, almost immediately earning Aegon's full attention. I gave the Queen a small nod before reaching for my cup and slowly brining it up to my lips.

"Lady Jeyne... it was said that you were seen alone and unaccompanied in the library with Prince Aemond only a short while ago."

There was nothing that could have prepared me for what Alicent had said. I could feel everyone's eyes suddenly shift to me as I choked on my small sip of tea. I slowly lifted my head to meet the Queen's eyes, a shocked expression on my face. Truthfully, I had no idea why that was surprising. Aemond and I were good friends, so of course we would spend time together. I said nothing in response, assuming that the Queen would have more to say. Alicent's voice dropped closer to a whisper, leaning forward towards me with slightly widened eyes.

"You must know that I do not plan to question your intentions, but others do not know you as I do," she spoke to me, a slightly concentrated look on her face as she paused. "You must be more careful as next time, my informant will not come straight to me."

I nodded slowly as Alicent spoke, taking in the tone of her voice. What she said was not threatening nor angry, instead more concerned. I gave the woman a quick, "I understand, your Grace," before she finally turned away from me. Alicent fixed her posture and cleared her throat, her gaze shifting between Aegon and Helaena. It would be impossible to tell that the two were married at first glance. Sure, that could be because they were literally siblings, but that isn't exactly my business. I slowly looked back up, only to see that Aegon was still staring at me.

His expression was completely unreadable, though there was an extremely light tinge on his lips that subtly hinted at a grin. I held the eye contact until I realized that Alicent had diverted her attention back to me. Her gaze shifted between the two of us slowly and methodically.

"I hope the tea is pleasant?" the Queen suddenly asked, looking back between all of us for a reaction. Aegon ripped his gaze away from me, staring down the the table and then to the far wall before giving his mother a small nod.

"Delightful as always" I said, trying my best to break the awkward tension that had suddenly filled the room. Even as I spoke I could feel Aegon's eyes falling back on me. He was being too obvious. It was stressing me out. At this point, Alicent and Helaena would be imbeciles not to notice. I couldn't even concentrate on the conversation the Queen was trying to carry with the others. I suddenly jolted up from my seat, looking over to Alicent and giving her a small curtsy.

"Please, excuse me for just a second, your Grace," I muttered, trying my best to use a loud and clear tone. I turned slowly away from the table, moving towards the door and leaving the chambers as quickly as possible. As I was leaving, I could hear someone else mutter a quick, "Excuse me as well," but I was in far too much of a rush to take notice at first. I could feel my gown flowing behind me as I quickly walked down the corridor. I only made it halfway before something stopped me. I needed a breath. The short events from that room seemed to have caught up with me. My hands moved to my hips and my head tilted up to the ceiling, my eyes shutting for just a second.

There was another noise in the corridor. The light sound of footsteps growing closer helped pull me down to reality. I turned slowly back around, coming face to face with Aegon yet again. My breath hitched in my throat, watching as he quickly approached me. He stood several inches away, leaving some room between the two of us. I figured that he would say something about his brother and me. I figured that he would make some sort of horrible remark that would make me hate myself for feeling so close to him. He said nothing, though. Aegon stared silently down at me.

"What are you doing..." I suddenly whispered out to him. There was a tinge of sadness that resided somewhere deep within my tone. It was a sound that questioned the true meaning of what I said.

"I am simply looking."

"Why?"

"What do you mean, why?"

Our voices were soft and our eyes remained matched within each others. I fell silent after Aegon's response. I could feel a familiar stinging feeling in my eyes, though I couldn't even say why. We paused simultaneously and the silence that fell upon us was immediately cold. I stared up at Aegon without a word, the hurt look in my eyes furthering as I continued to think of what to say. He slowly reached out to me, his hands moving to place themselves on my hips. I shook my head slightly as I felt his contact, my hands then moving to push his away from me.

"I will not be your mistress. I will not be- I won't-" I could feel my voice breaking as I spoke, though I was determined not to show any kind of weakness. My gaze shifted to and from Aegon as I spoke, though I avoided to look too closely at his expression. "I won't simply be someone you call upon when you get lonely."

The calm expression that had once resided upon Aegon's face slowly began to fade as I spoke. It did not look as if he was disappointed by my words, though. He looked as if I had stabbed him directly through the heart. Slowly, though, his expression began to drop. He continued to look down at me as he spoke. His voice basically lowering to a whisper. Again, there was nothing that could have prepared me for what he said next.

"I do not know that I can offer you any more."
