Aegon Targaryen

Rain pattered lightly against the castle's outer walls, creating a beautiful sound from the outside. Jeyne's day had been quiet for the most part. She had been avoiding both of the brothers throughout, which was practically impossible since she was technically living in their home. The sky was dark and filled with clouds by now. Jeyne retreated up to her room earlier than usual, which was mainly thanks to boredom. Her mind wandered as she walked inside her chambers, her thoughts drifting back to her last conversation with Aegon. What had once been sadness had now been replaced by anger and light resentment.

"What gives him the right..." Jeyne would mumbled under her breath as she began to undress, changing into her usual nightgown.

"Who does he think he is..." She paused as she spoke that out loud again, an almost deadpan expression forming on her face. "The damned heir to the Iron Throne, I figure," she'd mumbled angrily.

Once she had finished changing, Jeyne moved to her bed and pulled the sheets away from the mattress. She was interrupted by a sudden and light knock on her door, though. Jeyne slowly shifted her eyes in the direction of the noise, her eyes widening slightly. There were only a few people that could be standing on the other side of that door. Jeyne made her way across the room, reaching hesitantly for the handle of the door. Time seemed to slow as she reached out, her mind racing hastily.

Jeyne opened the door quietly, peeking out into the hallway. There he stood, staring down at her with a slightly confused expression on his face. Aegon's feet shifted as he began to take a step forward, his hand reaching out to push the door further ajar. Jeyne stepped back as he slowly and quietly took a step into the doorway. The expression Aegon wore was basically unreadable, though it was obvious that he had something on his mind.

"Are you drunk?" Jeyne asked him quietly, her eyes remaining fixed on his.

Aegon's jaw visibly tensed as she asked him that question. It seemed to always be a conversation starter for the two of them. He shook his head slowly, taking a few more steps into the room before speaking finally.

"I couldn't find Helaena."

He didn't answer Jeyne's question, so she had no way of knowing that Aegon was stone cold sober for the first time in what could have been months. Jeyne knew well, from Helaena herself, that Aegon could only seem to "consummate their marriage when tipsy." With this information, it was easy for her to jump to conclusions about the meaning behind Aegon's sudden appearance at her doorstep. Jeyne said nothing in response, but her expression was extremely telling.

Her eyebrows furrowed deeply, her eyes narrowing just slightly. Her lips shifted quickly to a long, drawn out frown. She turned suddenly away from him, the angry tone in her stride extremely evident. Jeyne didn't get far before Aegon suddenly spoke again.

"You've been avoiding me."

She paused where she stood, which was a good three or four feet away from him. Her back faced forward him as he spoke, trying her best to hide the sudden shift in her angry expression. She couldn't help but be saddened by his words. The tone of Aegon's voice was soft and somehow genuine. She slowly turned her head towards him, getting a good look at the expression he wore on his face. It was the same as before.

"Yes."

"What have I done to earn such treatment from you?"

There was a slight shift in his voice now. The door slowly closed behind Aegon as he took one final step further into the room. A part of his voice almost sounded angry, but it was clouded mostly by confusion. Jeyne stayed silent even after he had finished speaking, her eyes remaining focused on his. Her gaze shifted between both of his eyes, the same frown spread across her lips. Aegon shifted his feet again after a few seconds of unbearable silence, his head shaking slightly.

"What is it? What have I done? Enlighten me, please, Jeyne."

There was something demanding about Aegon's voice. It was as if he needed an answer to continue on living. Despite the obvious desperation, he still almost sounded about as angry as you did. His voice was deep and quiet with an almost gravely accent to it. Jeyne's eyes widened slightly as he asked again, her head shaking just slightly. She began to turn back away from him before speaking.

"You should not be here. If we were to be seen or heard-"

"You have not answered my question."

Jeyne froze in her steps as Aegon interrupted her. She stood as still as stone for a moment, her back still facing him. A look of what could only be explained as fear began to form on the prince's face as she stood there ominously, still not speaking a word. Jeyne suddenly spun back around, striding quickly up to Aegon. She stared up at him, an obviously furious expression gracing her delicate features. The prince stared down at her, preparing himself for the seven hells to break loose.

"Countless times I have told you. Over and over again I tell you that we should not be as close as we are but still- here you are now. In my chambers. Not your own. Not your wife's. Mine. Torturing me here with your questions, and not to mention the sheer lack of attention you pay to the things I say to you. Have you ever heard a voice besides your own in your entire life? You ask me questions I have answered for you hundreds if not thousands of times, yet you still refuse to hear me!"

Jeyne had to stop herself from saying anything else. The enraged expression that had been on her face at the beginning of her lecture had began to disappear slightly. Tears had begun to flood her eyes, though it was impossible to tell whether they were from her rage or her sadness. Perhaps it was a combination of both. Aegon stood silently throughout the entirety of her rampage, his expression remaining still and practically unmoving. His eyes stayed attached to Jeyne's through all of it, though. For what could have been the first time ever, he actually listened to what she had to say. For Aegon, it felt sort of like they were sent back to their childhood. Jeyne used to have to lecture him whenever he got in trouble since he never seemed to listen to his mother when she tried.

"I still have yet to understand why you must push me away as you do."

Despite his genuine expression and seeming interest in what she had to say, Aegon still seemed to be as lost as ever. Jeyne let out a short and blunt sigh, shaking her head slowly and reaching to pinch the bridge of her nose between her pointer finger and thumb.

"What do you care, anyway," she breathed out, an exhausted tone in her voice. She was tired. The angry expression had completely washed off of Jeyne's face by now. It was replaced with sadness and disappointment. She was disappointed in herself most of all. How could she have let herself get close to a man like Aegon? Sure, when they were kids he was not married, but he is now. The next sentences to leave both of their mouths would be some of the most defining words of their entire relationship.

"I do care-"

"It will pass."
