-- HEY YOU GUYS! IM BACK! friendly neighborhood author here and ready to get this party started i guess. it's currently 1 am but tbh i am in the writing mood or feeling seasonal depression on the 2nd day of november. there's really no way to tell! currently listening to the call me by your name soundtrack as i write this so that's prob not helping. anyways that's enough trauma dumping, time to write some shi up. also a little reminder again that Aemond is around 8 years old at the moment so hold those nasty comments in till we get to the later chapters ;) --

Aemond Targaryen

There was a still silence within the walls of the castle. I had been living here for many, many years now, yet I had never seen it this quiet. It was later at night now, and I hadn't been able to sleep for some time. Normally, I would just head to the library and try my best to pick a nice boring book to put me to sleep, but tonight I had decided to be a little more spontaneous. I didn't get far down the hall before a sound coming from behind startled me.

"Jeyne?"

A familiar voice called out to me from down the dark hallway. I squinted my eyes as I tried my best to make out the familiar figure. The sound of footsteps getting closer made me stop in my tracks, my arms slowly crossing in front of me. Within seconds, I spotted him. It was Aegon's younger brother, Aemond Targaryen.

"You almost made my heart leap from my chest," I said dramatically, an unamused expression plastered across my face.

Aemond Targaryen was an easy kid to spot out. He had shoulder length blonde hair and wore an eyepatch over his left eye. He was normally dressed in a dark green color, though he could occasionally be seen wearing black. Aemond stood only an inch or so taller than me, which contrasted the fact that I was two or three years older than him. Unlike his tall and lanky brother Aegon, Aemond had not seemed to hit his growth spurt just yet.

"Apologies, my Lady," Aemond responded lightly in a respectful manner.

It was always conflicting to think about the differences between the two brothers. Aegon was loud and childish, while Aemond on the other hand was much more soft-spoken. It could be exhausting to keep up with at times and often just ended up making him sound like a little cunt, but I find it amusing when he breaks character.

"What are you doing out of your chambers, anyways? It's quite late."

I think its so adorable when he acts like he's older than me. I rolled my eyes at the boy, my arms uncrossing and moving to rest on my sides.

"I could ask you the same thing, though I wouldn't because it's frankly none of my business," I threw back at him with a smug grin.

An unamused expression formed across Aemond's face once he realized my words were a slight against him. His one good eye blinked slowly at me before he drew in a harsh, deep breath and turned to walk away. I let out a soft giggle, fast walking to catch up with him. I tilted my head up slightly as I began to walk beside him down the hallway, swaying lightly in an attempt to cheer back up the boy.

"Come on, Aemond," I said in a teasing tone, pausing for a second as he continued to face forward to avoid eye contact. "I didn't mean it, you know. If it irks you so, I will tell you why I wander the corridors alone."

After a quick second of silence from Aemond, I finally realized that the boy was not walking back to his chambers. He was headed for one of the smaller exits of the castle. My eyebrow raised slightly and I turned my head to face towards him again. I had no idea why the boy planned to go outside, though I continued to walk along with him nonetheless.

"Where are you going?"

"Where I had planned to go before spotting you."

"Can I come along?"

"If you so wish; I do not mind."

"Gee, thanks-"

I was cut off as we finally reached the exit, which was a larger wooden door. I glanced over at Aemond as he pushed the door open, revealing the courtyard of the castle. His gaze shifted lightly over to me before he stepped out into the night, the cloak he wore flapping lightly in the wind. I wrapped myself up in the light cape I wore and strode after him. He came to a halting stop once we reached the steps that led out to the courtyard, turning back towards me. Aemond took a few short steps down the stone stairs before reaching his hand out towards me.

I reached my own hand out and took his willingly, taking the gesture and slowly sitting down onto the first step. I sat slightly slouched in order to keep the cold off of me, tilting my head up and watching as Aemond moved to sit down beside me. I rested my hands lightly in my lap and kept my eyes planted on his.

"So what exactly did you plan to do out here? Torture yourself with the cold?"

A small grin curled across Aemond's face and he let out a short amused breath, shaking his head lightly at me. He suddenly looked back away from me, his chin tilting up to look to the sky.

"I came to watch the stars."

Watch the stars? As in watch them move? Was that a side effect of the whole missing eye thing? Despite the chaos that ensued in my mind, my gaze remained on Aemond's face. There was a look of almost wonder displayed across his expression, which was a rare sight. I had been friends with Aemond for a very long time now, and he was one of my closest friends. Aemond didn't have many of those. Even his brother, Aegon, didn't seem to get along well with him.

Aegon was known well for his jokes and pranks, though the ones he pulled on Aemond seemed to be much worse than what anyone else experienced. Truth be told, he had no one here in King's Landing. Helaena was always friendly to him, but it could be hard to talk to her at times if you didn't have the patience for it. Luckily for the impatient family, I did.

My family had sent me to King's Landing to stay with the Targaryens when I was around eight years old. I had met the family when I was much younger, though, around the age of four or five. They had sent me away as a sort of peace offering to the royals, though they were hoping for some sort of marriage arrangement to occur once I was old enough in the Queen's eyes.

My gaze slowly wandered away from Aemond's face and up to the sky. Suddenly, I understood why the boy wished to come out here. The lack of lighting in the city made the stars shine bright above the two of us. My mouth hung open just slightly as my eyes shot from star to star. There was a moment of silence before I heard a soft laugh coming from beside me that seemed to rip me back down to Earth. I turned my head quickly to the side, my gaze immediately meeting Aemond's. He had a wide grin on his face as he giggled, his hand moving to cover his mouth once I took notice.

My nose scrunched up at the boy and I rolled my eyes, moving my hand from my lap to give him a light shove on the shoulder. I couldn't hide the grin on my own face, though. He took the hit willingly, moving his hand as he began to laugh louder. I didn't need context to know why he was laughing. I most likely looked like a newborn deer staring up at the stars how I was. Aemond laughed for a few seconds before the noise began to die down again, leaving us back in our comfortable silence.

My head turned slowly away from him and back up to the sky, and his did the same. We sat still as stone there on those stairs, each wrapped in our own cloaks to try and stay warm in the cool nighttime air.

"Words are futile devices."

-- time update: it is not 2:10 am. feeling good (no im not). anyway, hope y'all end up liking this chapter here. this one is much longer than the first, but its less dialogue and more backstory cause i forgot to put it in the first one lol. next aegon chapter will be much longer for those people that are rooting for him rn! i honestly don't know who im liking more but there's gonna be like no romance in these younger chapters. im saving the juicy stuff for the time skip atm. alright im gonna go to bed (scroll on tik tok for hours) goodnight everyone love y'all--

QUESTION: do we like the set up of the book rn (exploring random moments between characters) or should i do more of a strict story structure? once i hit time skip i will most likely move to a more organized structure but for now im just kinda writing. pls lmk in the comments!
