Worst Of You, by Maisie Peters

When Hermione awoke the next morning, she realized that she had overslept. She groaned. Why did she have to choose the first day of school to oversleep? So, in her hurry to get ready, Hermione didn't bother to fix her hair. She figured that the braid that Ginny had put in her hair the night before would do well enough. She then packed all of her schoolbooks in her schoolbag, pausing only momentary before packing the snitch in her bag and hurried off to class. Her first class of the day was potions, as usual. She hoped that there would be a good seat left, even though she was running behind. Surely Ginny, Harry, or Ron would save her a seat.

As she ran down the hall, she couldn't help but notice that they were awfully barren. Perhaps she had slept longer than she realized. But it didn't take her too long to make it to the dungeons where Professor Snape held their potions classes. She entered the room in a rush, not realizing Snape had already begun the lesson and everyone's gaze fell upon her. Snape paused, stopping the lesson. Hermione frowned. She knew she was behind schedule, but the class shouldn't have started for at least another few minutes.

Professor Snape didn't continue speaking until every single student was staring at Hermione. "Well, well, well Miss. Granger. Late I see." He raised an eyebrow. "And at the expense of interrupting my class as well." The potions master sneered. "Not unusual. Please. Take a seat so that we may continue the lesson for today." Hermione looked around for an empty seat. Harry and Ron were partners, as usual and Ginny was sitting beside Theodore Nott. Hermione frowned. She should've known Ginny would be sitting with him. That meant that the only free seat was... "We don't have all day, Miss. Granger. Please take your seat next to Mr. Malfoy." Snape said, annoyance lacing his tone.

Hermione grimaced, walking over to take the only seat available. Right next to Draco Malfoy. She did her best to avoid eye contact with him as she sat her bookbag down and began to take out her school supplies. But much to her annoyance, her potions book was missing from her abundance of books and supplies. She had used an undetectable extension charm, of course, so that her bag would fit all of her schoolbooks. That way she wouldn't need to make any trips back to the Gryffindor common room between her extracurricular activities and could fit more into her schedule. But somehow, her potions book had slipped past her that morning and she had forgotten it in her room.

When Hermione looked up, Snape and everyone else's eyes were on her again. She shuddered, unsure of why, until Snape spoke. "Do you not have the answer to my question Miss. Granger?" Snape's eyes narrowed. "Because I was under the impression that you always had the answer, whether you were spoken to or not." Hermione cringed and Snape frowned. "What seems to be the problem, Miss. Granger? What has been occupying your attention so that you are unable to pay attention or answer a question when asked?"

"Um," Hermione swallowed. "I apologize professor, but I seem to have misplaced my potions book. I was simply looking for it when you had asked me the question and didn't hear what you had said. Please re-ask me so that I may answer."

Snape's eyes and lips had become a thin line at this point, but he still asked the question once more. "What potion are fluxweed and Boomslang skin used to brew?"

"Polyjuice potion, sir."

With a reluctant sigh, Professor Snape nodded. "Correct. However, you had a very quick response for someone who hasn't reached that advanced level of potions making yet."

Hermione bit her lip. "Well sir, you had to have thought I could answer it, or you wouldn't have asked."

Snape sneered but didn't reduce any points from Gryffindor for talking back as Hermione had feared. "Very well, Miss. Granger. However, since you have found yourself without the necessary bookwork for our class, you shall be sharing with your partner in order to pass this lesson." Snape grinned. "I'm sure Mr. Malfoy shall not object to my arrangement."
