Chapter 17

Hearts don't lie

Andre's POV

It all happened like a dream, Mr Lucas was about to shoot me when 16 pushed me out of the way and took the bullet for me, The impact of the gunshot made her fall back, she fell into the river and was washed away by the current.

It all happened so fast but yet slowly, I was frozen.

"Sisi!" Nina cried out and ran to the river in an attempt to help her but it was too late, her body was nowhere to be found. Damien didn't look any better than I did, he was frozen and so was I. Why would she take a bullet for me?.

Mr Lucas looked angry, he aimed the gun at me again but just then the police arrived at the scene. If only they were 20 minutes earlier.

Mr Lucas let out a loud sigh and escaped, the police came over and immediately began to interrogate us.

"Please, officers, our friend was shot and she fell into the river, please help her" Nina cried but the officers paid her no mind.

"What were you guys doing here and why do I smell drugs?" One asked and began to sniff me

"Dammit! Didn't you hear her! Our friend is drowning in that  river and we need your help, isn't that your job? Or is it to sit around and ask meaningless questions that could be answered later!?" Damien said burning with anger, I had never seen him like that before, he always seemed to have it all together.

I turned my head and looked at Nina, she was crying for 16,  16, the girl I've wanted to kill since I was a child, what was going on?

The police officers looked a little vexed but they called for the life guard and some health officials. They began to search the river for her body, we stayed there for hours and once the sun was down everyone gave up, her body was nowhere to be found.

"We did our best" one of the police men said and they all left, they didn't even bother to interrogate us anymore.

"Shit!" Damien cussed under his breath and looked down at me, I was still on the floor, I didn’t know if it was shock but I couldn't move.

"Let's get you home Andre" Damien said faking a smile, I turned to Nina and she was still crying her eyes out.

"Don't you want to find her?" I finally spoke up

"What?"

"Just because the police gave up doesn't mean you should too" I said but actually my voice came out as a whisper. Damien looked shock but he nodded in agreement, just then the dog that they were with began to bark loudly.

"What's wrong Bella" Nina asked petting the dog, the dog ran and everyone looked stunned but none of us followed it

"Follow her Nina, she might get lost" Damien said and Nina was about to obey but stopped when we all saw the dog running back but this time she had something in between her teeth and was dragging it across the sand.

"What's that?"

The closer it got the more visible it became it was-

"16!!" Nina exclaimed and we all rushed to Bella, who was soaking wet.

"Good job, sweetie, you found her" Nina sobbed petting her.

Damien immediately got down on his knees and began to give her a mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

"Come on" he breathed and put his mouth back on hers, his black hair fell across his eyes as he did that. After a few minutes she coughed out some blood and water and Damien placed his ear on her chest to check if her heart was still beating.

"She's alive, but she's loosing a lot of blood" he said and my eyes met with her bullet wound, she was shot in the stomach and her clothes were all bloody.

"Let's get her to the hospital" Nina said and Damien lifted her on his back, her blood stained his white shirt.
We immediately got in a taxi and asked the driver to speed it up.

We were at the hospital, it was midnight and we still hadn't heard anything from the doctor.

"Andre, are you sure you don't want to get a check up?" Damien asked for the twentieth time

"Yes I'm sure" I simply said, if I was to get a checkup they'd find out I took serione and it could cause trouble for everyone.

"Do you have some remains of the serione you took?"  He asked and sat down beside me

"No, I took the whole pack" I said and he ran his hands through his hair.

"What were you thinking Andre, why would you take that, it's a very dangerous drug"

"I know" I said and looked at the floor, I couldn't look him in his eyes, I was ashamed of myself

"I just wanted....wanted to stop being a coward, I wanted to protect everyone from-"

"16" He said completing my sentence.

"You know, she's not what you think she is" he said and turned to face me "she's not the one who killed our parents, sure, she's linked, but she wasn't the murderer" he continued

"Why didn't you tell me this all along?"  I asked

"You wouldn't have believed me and why didn't you tell me you were working with Mr Lucas?" He asked and he had a very good point.

"Where's Nina?" I asked looking around for her

"She's downstairs at the vet getting Bella a check up, apparently the dog got some water in it's lungs while saving 16"

"Oh" I simply said and we both stayed quiet after that.

A few minutes later, the doctor came out and walked towards us

"Are you the relatives of the deceased?" He asked and we both jumped off our seats.

"Deceased, is she dead?!" Damien exclaimed and the doctor began to laugh.

"No, I apologize for the scare she's alive, she's just in a coma and hopefully she'd wake up any day now" he smiled and Damien let out a sigh of relief.

"Thank goodness" he said and his eyes smiled even though his lips didn't. He was a master of hiding his emotions but I saw through it all and right now, he was happy.
Why did he care about her so much?, Damien once said that I and Nina were the only people he cared about.

"Damien" I called out and he turned to face me

"Hm?"

"I want you......to tell me everything about 16"
