The River Palace was decorated more than usual. Long streams of fabric decorated across a courtyard where the coronation would take place. Garlands of flowers were also draped around the town and palace, the festive cheer filling the air.
Jaren stood in his room, looking at himself in the mirror. Today was the day of his coronation, after his mother decided to abdicate since Jaren had proved himself ready to become King. He wore an embellished jacket with dark trousers and his shoes were polished till he could see his own reflection. Medals hung from his jacket and a sword- not the eye of the gods- was hanging from his hip.
He looked like a king.
A knock came from the door behind him. "Come in," he called to the person standing outside. Footsteps entered the room and Jaren turned around to find Kiva, dressed in a deep forest green dress.
"The decorations look really nice." She commented as she embraced Jaren in a warm hug. He smiled.
"They are. Ori made the flower garlands- He wanted to help out." He explained, thinking about how if the circumstances were different, the young boy would be taking the throne, not him. It saddened him.
"Well, they look beautiful. So do you, for that matter." Kiva said as she fixed Jaren's collar. A smile was gleaming across her face. "Are you nearly ready?"
Jaren turned back looking in the mirror. "Almost," he responded. Kiva nodded.
"Alright, your mother wants to speak with you soon. I'll be sitting near Tor for the ceremony. Good luck." She waved goodbye, leaving Jaren standing in front of the mirror.
Shortly after, Ariana entered the room, standing beside him. There was a long silence as she looked at him. "You look like a king." Jaren acknowledged what she said with a nod. "Your father would be proud." She said quietly, sadness filling her voice. Jaren wrapped his arm around her, momentarily forgetting all that had happened in the past few years. Ariana had been clean for a few months now, changing for her family that was torn apart. Mirry was living with Serafina (A/N: is that her name? I can't remember) in Mirraven, Caldon spending time with Cresta (A/N: I don't ship Cresta and Caldon but it was implied so let's roll with it.) as well as splitting his time in Evalon. And then Ariana's husband was dead. But still she tried to battle her addiction to Angeldust.
"Thanks. Is everybody ready?" Jaren asked, turning from the mirror to the closed door. Ariana shuffled in her long, elaborate dress as she nodded.
"Everyone is ready for you now, darling." She softly said, guiding Jaren to the door. They walked together, as it was customary for the past ruler or current highest appointed royal council member to crown the new monarch. They entered the courtyard, horns blaring until all that was heard was silence. Everyone looked at the two royals standing at the entrance of a procession. Next to the officiant, stood Oriel since he was second in line for the throne as of Mirry's betrayal. She was seated next to Serafina, a sad glow set in her eyes yet she still held a firm gaze at Jaren.
The procession began, it was not too long or too short. It held a steady direction from one side of the courtyard to the further side as Jaren and Ariana led in a walk. Jaren stood next to Ori, Ariana opposite them. The ceremony went well, there were a lot of statements shared and traditions fulfilled. It had come to the time when Jaren was to be crowned.
Ariana stood before the crowd, it was not too big- only specially invited guests, before beginning a short speech. There would be an after-party once the traditional ceremony was concluded, with the public celebrating.
"Today is a momentous day. Prince Deverick will be taking the crown as I have chosen to abdicate. He will be a great king, like the prince you know already only that he will do great things. It is an honour that this man will be king." Ariana picked up the crown, glistening and shining in the sun, holding it above Jaren's head.
"Will you try your utmost hardest to serve this kingdom well?" She asked seriously, the crown only mere centimetres away from his head.
"I will." He replied calmly, cold metal meeting his head as the crown was placed on his head. He was now King of Vallenia.
