My talons dragged on the volcanic rock below me, but I couldn't show any other signs of weakness. My scales were red, the color of fury, despite my fear. I held my head high. I was not like the other captives.
The NightWings had called me a word, that I couldn't remember. It started with an A. But I remember it made me feel powerful. They were afraid of me. And that was what kept me going.
Dragons did strange things when they were afraid. Some of them would cower. Some would run. Some would try to fight, and some would win.
Unfortunately, these were the type that fought. But I wasn't going to let them win.
Being here, on this island, had hardened me. I was less naive than I had been before. I knew now that most dragons were horrible, ate meat, and also tried to use power for themselves, even if it meant hurting others. Nobody was like that in the rainforest.
I tripped over a bump in the floor and bit back a yelp. Instead, I growled at it, and the only sign of my pain was my tail, which curled up as my muscles tensed. The NightWing guards ignored me.
For the millionth time, I tried to open my wings. I would have flown away long ago if not for those stupid clamps, and luckily for me, they also restricted my powers. How did I know that? Because I had cast the enchantment.
It wasn't like I wanted to.
I started walking again. One NightWing murmured to another about how I looked like I had the ego of a SkyWing. I didn't know anything about SkyWings.
Then I was back in that room. That terrifying room. The laboratory. They were trying to get my venom again, I knew they were. The last time, they had repeatedly stepped on the soft spot on my tail to make me cooperate. And it was painful, and I did submit after not too long, but I was terrified that they had a new method.
Another NightWing came in and beamed at us. Or maybe he was thinking about all the nice venom he was going to get from me today. "Wonderful!" he said. "I get to try this one again?"
The guards chained me to the ground (with chains that I had also enchanted) before leaving the room.
"Are you going to be nice this time?" Mastermind asked. His voice was horribly calm and somewhat sugary, but also tart. Like a piece of fruit that wasn't quite ripe yet.
I shook my head and growled. "Never."
I couldn't show fear. They thought fear was entertaining. If I convinced them I would murder them all one day, maybe they would leave me alone.
"Still a lot angrier than the others, I see," Mastermind mused. "They're all green though! That's boring!"
"Just get it over with," I growled. "Quit yapping."
Mastermind slid a metal bowl towards me. "Just the venom," he said. "Then you'll be right back to your cave."
Ah yes, my cave. A smoky, hot, stinky place where they tried to feed me rotting corpses and prodded me with spears. Who wouldn't want to go back there?
I hissed.
Mastermind calmly picked up another bowl, put on some gloves, and went over to the lava vat. Without saying a word, he dipped the bowl into the lava. It came out full of liquid rock that was quickly cooling, but still hot enough to burn.
"I actually don't know if RainWing scales are more vulnerable then most dragons'," Mastermind said. "I have a theory that they might be. After all, they've never felt fire before. Shall we test it?"
I tried to step backward, but the chains stopped me. My scales were turning that barf green color that I hated. I quickly sent them back to red.
With the gloves that I had enchanted to be heat proof, Mastermind grabbed a small handful of lava and approached me. There was no way he was going to touch me with that. There was no way-
A small drop fell onto my shoulder.
I yelped and flinched away. It felt so hot that it was almost cold. Before it could harden, Mastermind wiped it away.
Another drop, in the same place. I couldn't move. I couldn't reach back and bite him. I had never bitten a dragon before. Instead, I whacked him with my tail.
Another drop. I growled and struggled against the chains.
A fourth drop, and this time I screamed.
It went on for several minutes. The more it happened, the more it hurt. There were a bunch of welts on my shoulder, and the scales were half melted.
It was obviously no concern of Mastermind's. He just continued with a stoic expression, asking every time, "You ready yet?" and every time, I'd reply, "You wish."
Until finally, he got impatient and shoved the entire bowl at me. I screamed and roared. Every nerve in my body was on fire. My scales were out of control, changing from blue to red to green to bright neon yellow to NightWing black, and I couldn't hold back curses that I didn't usually like to say.
Mastermind withdrew the bowl and waited for me to calm down. "I hadn't thought RainWings were capable of making that sound." He took a note on a pad and readied the bowl again.
"No," I whimpered. It didn't sound like me. "No, I'll do it."
Mastermind smiled as if he hadn't just tortured me with lava and gestured to the bowl on the ground.
I spat acid, which I had only really ever used to find my sister back home, into the bowl. Now, I was considering using it as a weapon.
"Good, good," Mastermind murmured.
The scales on my shoulder were warped. They were no longer mine. They seemed to belong to some battle-scarred dragon out fighting in the war. Not to me. I trembled a little, fighting to keep control of my scales. I was one of those war-torn dragons now, whether I wanted to be or not.
When the guards released me from the chains and brought me out of the laboratory, every scale on my body was a bright, fearful green.
