OC: Elija (she/her)
Species: Human
Universe: Genshin Impact (but involves characters from other worlds)

"You've been following us," Elija accused.

Her employer shrugged. "Just making sure you're doing your job. I don't want you stalling any more after the mission is over, got it?"

Elija folded her arms. "Who are you?"

The outlander smiled wryly. "Don't you worry about that. When do you expect you'll be ready?"

"I won't," Elija growled. "I'm backing out. You can't have Kalvin."

His smile faded. Elija couldn't hold back the smirk that tugged at her lips.

"What do you mean?" The outlander asked coolly.

"You can't have him," Elija repeated. "Keep your Mora. Those two care about each other more than I initially thought, they were holding-"

She stopped herself too late.

The client's voice was dangerously soft. "They were what?"

"Nothing," Elija said quickly, not quite sure how her employer related to Aljak and Jaron but not really wanting to know.

Before she knew what was happening, she was on her back on the ground. The outlander's spear brushed her throat. The metal was painfully cold.

"What were they doing?" he demanded.

Elija grasped for her knives, but they were on the other side of the tent. The spear was too long for her to hit him.

"Holding hands," she muttered. "They were holding hands. And I'm not going to work for you anymore."

Something crossed the outlander's face that Elija didn't like. "What in Tartarus..." he growled to himself. "I knew they joined forces, but this is ridiculous."

He turned his attention back to Elija and hissed, "You're passing up 500,000 Mora because the target was holding hands with someone?"

"Aljak is part of the tribe," Elija shot back. "So if she cares about him, then he isn't going anywhere."

The spear dug a little deeper into her neck. It was starting to go numb. Why was it doing that? It wasn't supposed to do that.

"Might I remind you," the client hissed, "You are on thin ice here. You're lucky I let you just give me Kalvin. Would you rather I have him, or both of them and your life?"

Elija dug her hands into the sand. "Fine," she spat. "He'll be ready tomorrow night."

"That's what I thought." Eelyak stepped back, put his spear away, and slipped out of the tent.

He was nowhere in sight when Elija stepped out after him. She gazed around at the group that had been sent on this mission - cooking food on a fire, tending to Sumpter Beasts, sleeping.

Jaron- no, the target. Elija, you can't think of him as a person if you want to pull this off.

The target was sitting at the edge of the oasis, coaxing a crocodile. Elija couldn't hear what he was saying, but his tone was soothing. Possibly magic. If she had time, she could use him against the Fatui later.

Elija wandered over to Aljak, who was sitting in the small area of shade under a palm tree. "You know, when I called you two lovebirds earlier today I was mostly joking, but now it seems a lot more likely."

Aljak immediately turned to glare at her. She probably deserved it.

Elija hesitated. Do I really want to say this?

"Be careful," she advised before she could second-guess herself any more. "People can be a valuable asset, but they can also be a distraction. And they can very easily be used against you."

She forced herself to walk away before she saw Aljak's reaction.

Surely it was for the best. If Elija was going to be forced into this, she wanted to make it as painless as possible for Aljak, because if she didn't trust Jaron, she wouldn't notice his absence. Either that, or Elija could just pretend she didn't care.

Possibly both.

She could say Jaron ran away. She could feign apathy.

Outlanders couldn't be trusted anyway. Aljak would be better off without him...

Right?
