OC: Miriam
Species: Elf
Universe: ???

Solus stared intently at Miriam.

"He wants to do it this time," Coulter translated.

Miriam shrugged. "Why are you asking me? It's a team, not a dictatorship. Go ahead."

Solus pumped xer fist, flapped their wings, and fluttered off to the herd of unicorns.

"He's going to scare them off," Coulter mumbled.

"You weren't any better when you started," Miriam reminded him. "Everything reminded you of Glacies and you were scared of rabbits. Rabbits, Coulter."

"Okay, look, jackalopes are mean- how'd you know her name was Glacies?"

"You talk in your sleep." Her tone was conversational, as if this was just a completely normal conversation.

"Why are you watching me sleep?"

Miriam hummed. "You told me you had nightmares so I was using magic to calm you down, but that's irrelevant."

Coulter stared at the rocks they were hiding behind. "I'm... not sure how to feel about that."

"It seems to be easing up, though. Are the dreams bearable?"

"They're fine, Miriam."

Miriam gave him a pointed look.

"Okay, maybe a little bit not fine," Coulter admitted. "But there's less than there used to be. They're getting easier to deal with."

"Good."

Solus returned, their halos glowing with triumph. Xe must have been excited, because Coulter blinked at him. "Slow down," he said.

Sometimes, Miriam wished she could read minds like Coulter could. It would make her job easier, and allow her to understand Solus. But Coulter said that it was more of a curse than a blessing since his dragon died. Forging mental connections, even if they were only for seconds at a time, reminded him too much of her.

He'll heal, Miriam thought. They both will. I did, didn't l?

Mostly.

"He said xe managed to tag two of the unicorns," Coulter said. "They'll be transported back to the Sanctuary after not too long."

Miriam smiled. "Good job, Solus!"

Solus' wings flared with pride. They folded their arms over his chest.

Coulter raised his eyebrows. "You what?"

"He what?" Miriam demanded.

"He taught them how to 'shish-kebab their enemies and banish them to the depths of hell.' What's a shish kebab?"

"You what?" Miriam shrieked. "Unicorns are a peaceful species!"

Coulter listened for a moment. "Solus says, 'Yes, but they must defend themselves.'"

"So you taught them to shish-kebab their enemies?!"

Solus nodded happily.

"Okay, but what is a shish kebab?" Coulter asked again. "Is it some sort of weapon?"

Solus stared at Coulter.

Coulter's eyes widened in alarm. "You taught them to impale people?!"

"A shish kebab is food on a skewer," Miriam sighed.

"Xe just said very gleefully that the unicorns won't have to worry about poachers anymore."

Despite herself, Miriam started laughing. "No... no, they won't."
