At first, I was confused.

This couldn't be real. He was a god. Who would even want to kill him?

However, I was forced to overcome my denial before I was ready. Rex Lapis was dead. Lady Ningguang was still standing there in shock, her calm mask shattered as she stared at the corpse in front of her. I could see the panic in her eyes. But this was no time to lose our composure - the culprit had to be in the crowd somewhere.

People were already starting to leave in a hurry. I wasn't sure which of my superiors gave the command to stop them, but someone did - and I sprang to action.

My Vision warmed, vibrating with energy, but I couldn't let myself use it. It would hurt potentially innocent civilians. Instead, I helped my fellow Millelith to restrain several of the attendees of the Rite of Descension. They begged, insisting that they had nothing to do with the murder. Despite my knowledge that they were probably in fact innocent, I forced myself to harden, to ignore their pleas. I was just doing my job, and if they were really innocent, they'd be released soon anyway.

"That's them! The culprit!"

Alarmed, I looked over to where a small group of soldiers was chasing down a blonde girl and a tiny floating fairy thing.

I arrived at the base of the staircase down from Yujing Terrace. The Millelith had cornered the girl. The little fairy thing was nowhere to be seen, but the girl didn't seem to be going anywhere. She couldn't have been much older than I was. Her hair was blonde, short in the back, and had two long strands in the front on either side of her face like some sort of reverse mullet. She didn't seem to have a vision, but she did have a strange aura. I couldn't place it just yet - I wasn't very good at detecting elemental traces. She had her sword out and looked frightened but determined.

"There! Arrest her!"

The Millelith surged forward towards the girl. She held her sword ready to fight, but it turned out she didn't need to.

A soldier screamed in pain as an arrow pierced through a chink in his shoulder. I only saw a blur before a spear pushed another guard aside. A tall ginger man pushed through the small group of guards towards the supposed culprit.

Maybe he had something to do with it, I thought angrily. I jumped into the newcomer's path. "Hey!"

He pushed me aside like I was no more significant than a small slime. More guards advanced toward him.

It happened too fast for me to remember correctly, but there was some sort of burst of Hydro magic. I felt a wall of water slam into me and I was pushed backwards. I fell off the staircase and plunged into the canal. The Millelith around me were in a similar state.

I stared up at the man, who exchanged a few words with the girl before they both jumped out of sight.

I spat canal water out of my mouth, unable to stop who I assumed were the murderers of Rex Lapis as they escaped.
