[ MADDIE ]

"Bye guys, I'll see you all very soon," I wave to the group of boys sitting in Cameron's SUV. A chorus of "Bye Mads" are yelled out to me as Cameron drives off.

I agreed to meet with Ms. Abby, the girls, and all our moms in the hotel restaurant 10 minutes ago but I'm already late. I also have to go to my room to change because the guys got me incredibly wet.

Wait, Pause. That last sentence probably sounded extremely dirty. I was wet because we were playing in the ocean at the beach so get your mind out of the gutter...

I quickly head to my room, tie my hair which was still noticeably wet in a ponytail and change into a dry pair of shorts and a striped crop top from Brandy Melville. I put on a random pair of flip flops then raced downstairs. That was a bit of a challenge because I soon discovered that these flip-flops were Mackenzie's which are about 3 sizes too small which made running a tad difficult.

Long story short, I fell over 4 times.

About 5 minutes later, I finally made it to the restaurant. I spotted the table where everyone was sitting and hurried over to it.

"Hello everyone. I'm so sorry that I'm late," I apologize. My mom shoots me an angry look and she has a right to because she doesn't want me to lose Ms. Abby's favortism. If Abby doesn't love me as much as she does I'd lose millions of opportunities.

I know that I'm very privileged to be favoured by her as much as I am because the other girls don't get anything close to it, not even my sister.

"Maddie, where have you been these past few days, we've hardly seen you and you haven't showed up to one practice. That is very out of character for you," Ms. Abby scolds me.

Wow. Ms. Abby hasn't scolded me in years. She's always had nothing but nice thinks to say about me but for the first time, I can hear a trace of disappointment in her voice.

"I'm really sorry, I've just been hanging out with some of my new friends. But it won't happen again I swear," I promise her and I mean it. I don't like letting people who matter to me down.

"I'm not gonna restrict you from spending time with your friends as its not fair of me to do that but you better not miss any other practices. You missed all the practices for the group dance in 3 days so I had to give the lead role that was meant for you, to Kendall," she shrugs.

Kendall gives me a smug look of victory. Everyone thinks because of how we act on the show that we are the best of friends, but that couldn't be more far from the truth. She wants to do whatever it takes to beat me and can't stand my presence. But I don't exactly mind because the feeling is most definitely mutal.

"What about my solo?" I question nervously. I run a hand through my hair in frustration as I await her response.

I don't care what she does and what dances she kicks me out of as long as I get to keep my solo. Honestly group dances don't matter to me, I know I can win on my own.

"You still have your solo, but you have to learn it today. Right after this dinner," Miss Abby warns.

"Please get you're priorities straight, Maddie," she whispers only loud enough for me to hear. "You have a lot of talent but it won't take you anywhere if you don't take advantage of it."

I nod my head knowing that I'm out of chances and can not mess up again.

I check my phone and see I got a text from Hayes. I definitely prefer talking to him opposed to the people I'm stuck at the table with.

Hayes: mADZZ

I can't help but giggle at his use of random capitalization. My mom looks at me funny but I just shrug her off and turn my attention back to my phone.

Maddie: wHAT

I decide on copying his random capitalization.

Hayes: wanna chill wit meee?

Maddie: nah

Hayes: whyyyy?

Is this kid serious?

Maddie: we legit went to the beach like 3 hours ago dude

Hayes: sooo what?? I like chilling with yaa !!

I like chilling with you too is the first thing I want to say but I decide against it knowing that it's probably not a good idea after my talk with Ms. Abby.

Maddie: k but i can't anyway

Hayes: why?

Maddie: Because i got solo practice right now, and already lost the lead in the group dance cause of u !!

Hayes: awee sorry :( but we'll chill soon right?

Maddie: idk maybe

I hate being dry like this but I don't know if I'll even be able to see him for the rest of this trip, excluding the TCAs of course. I just want to stay in Miss Abby's good books and if that means staying away from my new friend then so be it.

Hayes: why maybe? we have to chill, ur my fave person in the world to chill with!!! :))

Him sending me cute messages like this is not making this any easier. It's hard to be firm and direct when he's making me smile like an idiot.

Maddie: I have to be at dance hayes, i got a comp in 3 days and I haven't practice all week. you're a distraction and we need some time apart

Hayes: im not a distraction, im ur friend....

Maddie: well friends sometimes need a break, u get that right

Maddie: these few days have been fun Hayes but i have to get back to my life

Maddie: Hayes?

Hayes: Idk what to say I guess ill c ya at the tca's then never again...

Maddie: hayes don't be like this we're still friends, I'm just gonna be pretty busy with dance and can't risk getting in trouble again :/

Hayes: r we? bc it seems like ur breaking up with our friendship which is kinda messed up and idk why ur acting like this soo

I decide there is no point of carrying on this argument knowing that continuing it won't make it any better, it'll probably get worse.

Maddie: whatever, I got to go to my solo practice.

Maddie: Just so you know I'm used to having friends walk out me and this won't even phase me.

He didn't respond.
