Six Months Later — The Royal Court
The court had changed.
In the months since the coronation, King Jungkook had proven himself a different ruler than anyone had expected. He was quiet, watchful, deliberate. He did not shout or threaten. He simply... waited. And in his waiting, he had been building.
The Min clan had expected him to crumble. They had expected him to beg for forgiveness, to come crawling back to their alliance, to admit that he could not rule without them.
Instead, Jungkook had done something no one anticipated: he had ignored them.
He had appointed new ministers from minor clans men who owed their positions to him, not to the old powers. He had cultivated the Sarim scholars, the Confucian intellectuals who had long resented the Min clan's dominance. He had opened the royal treasury to fund academies in the provinces, winning the loyalty of young scholars who would one day fill the court.
And all the while, the Queen Dowager Hara sat in her chambers, watching, waiting, powerless.
She had tried, in the beginning. She had summoned ministers, demanded they pressure the king to marry. She had sent letters to the Min clan, promising that her son would come around. She had even tried to have the palace searches for the missing servant Taehyung, the one who had simply vanished the night of the coronation.
But the king had quietly, firmly, blocked every move.
The ministers she summoned were replaced. The letters she sent were intercepted. The searches were stonewalled by guards who answered only to the king.
And now, six months later, Hara sat alone in her chambers, staring at a letter she had just received.
The king requests your presence in the throne room. Immediately.

The Throne Room — That Afternoon
The court was assembled. Nobles from every province stood in their appointed places, their faces a mixture of curiosity and unease. The new ministers Jungkook had appointed stood near the throne, their expressions carefully neutral. The Min clan ministers stood apart, their faces dark, their whispers sharp.
Jungkook sat on the throne, the crown on his head, his robes formal and heavy. His face revealed nothing.
"Today," he said, his voice carrying through the hall, "I make an announcement."
The hall went silent.
"I have spent the past six months considering the future of this kingdom. I have considered alliances. I have considered heirs. I have considered the stability of the throne."
He paused. His eyes swept across the court, lingering for just a moment on his mother, who stood pale and rigid among the nobles.
"I have decided to take a consort."
The whispers began immediately. Hara's face went white. The Min clan ministers exchanged sharp glances.
"I have chosen a man," Jungkook continued, "of noble character and unwavering loyalty. He has served this palace for years. He has proven himself in ways that cannot be measured by bloodline or birth."
