The analog clock flashed 3:02 am in bright red neon, the only light in the dark oasis that was the kitchen. It was the special kind of darkness, one that made it so you couldn't differentiate any sort of shapes or forms inside it, leaving only your imagination to fill in the blanks.

The only person awake at that hour was the mother, who was tracing her hand up and down the wall in an attempt to find the light switch. All was still, the only sound that she could hear being the faint thump of her own heartbeat.

A heartbeat that quickened once she saw the two eyes that pierced through the darkness and into her soul.

Her first instinct was to turn around and leave, yet when she did turn around, those same eyes were right in front of her.

Then, the eerie stillness of the night was disturbed by a loud shriek and a wet thump.
