Lisa started her morning late and slept in until it was late in the morning. Being on the island made her anxious, even though it was her previous home. However, she had a place to get to, so made her way down the stairs with her red yoga mat under her arm. It matched her pants. Lisa made her way towards the kitchen and opened the fridge, then gripped a water bottle.
"Hey," Wayne said as he grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl. "Is today the beach yoga class?"
"Yeah, I'm heading out," she said as she closed the fridge. She faced her husband with a smile. "I'll be back in about two hours."
"Alright." He stood on the other side of the island. "Be careful. There was some crazy man at a bar recently."
Lisa bobbed her head as she made her way towards the door. Wayne went back to his office with a slow stride, taking a bite out of the Granny apple. Her car was waiting for her in the driveway. The tow truck from New York must have dropped it off. The keys were on the driver's seat. She opened the door, grabbed the keys, and hopped in. Her mat was placed in the seat next to her like it was her child. With a quick twist, the engine roared and she was off. The gate opened and she turned to the left.
The yoga class was at a small, private shore and down the road according to the flier. Organizations would host small activities for the bored women, or at least the women that could afford the cost of whatever was happening. Lisa had money that she did not like spending, but she stored some for every summer for at least one activity. That day, it was a beach yoga class.
As she drove, the wind made her hair blow around. She always had the windows down when she was on the island. It would bring her back from when she was young. She would be in the passenger seat, or in the back, and her head would be sticking outside of the window. Sometimes, her friends and Lisa would put their whole bodies outside, sitting on the ledge of the door. They would blast music from the old radios. She always reminisced on the good parts of living on the island.
Lisa parked the car and put a couple quarters in the public machine. She held the mat tightly as she walked down the road. There were a few stores, but the beach was designated for the few that could access it.
"Lisa?" a voice said. She ignored it. "Lisa, is that you?" The voice was in front of her and she brought her eyes up. Her eyes slightly widened and she almost dropped her keys. "You're Lisa, right?"
It was Morgan, holding a flier of her own. She had not seen her in about a decade and a half. She had barely changed. Her blonde hair was still curly and her blue eyes dazzled in the sun. The only things that changed about her were smile wrinkles that became more prominent and there were gray streaks in her light hair. She reminded Lisa of him.
"Oh, my," Morgan said as she slowly approached her. The beach entrance was a couple of feet away, but it felt like it was a mile off. "It's so good to see you. I need your help."
"I can't help you, Morgan," Lisa said as she eyed Morgan, the gate, then back to the woman she did not want to see.
"Please. It's my family." Lisa began to walk around the car and walk around Morgan. "I can't support them as much as I could. Ever since Ed has been away, it's only been me since Henry broke his leg."
"I can't help. I'm sorry."
"Please, Lisa." Lisa walked around the car and marched down the road towards the gate. "Everyone knows you're just a gold digger. That's why you left Ed. You're a gold digger, Lisa."
Lisa kept her pace as she checked in at the gate, her heart racing. Morgan did not run after her, but it felt like she would somehow spon in front of Lisa. Morgan stood where she was and watched as Lisa walked towards the private beach. She had changed so much. The girl she knew her whole childhood was gone, at least from the exterior. Her old jean shorts and red tank top were all a memory. Instead, it was a red mat and matching Lulumemon yoga pants. The girl that sat across from her in the car with the breeze in their hair was now swaying her hair back and forth in a ponytail.
