Alby gave the girl a very broad tour of the Glade, pointing out every single location to her as she followed him around. The Girl decided that she quite liked Alby. She liked how responsible and determined he was, and found herself rather impressed by his leadership skills.
Alby Trailed the little redhead around the gardens and the homestead, explaining each and every job to her, introducing her to multiple Gladers along the way.
"Now, as you know, all of us Gladers have specific jobs," Alby said. The girl nodded quickly. "It was decided in our gathering, that you are going to try out for each job for the following jobs for the next few days. Tomorrow, you will help Frypan around the kitchen. The day after, you will help the medjacks, then the Track hoes"
"What about the Runners and the builders?" The girl asked, raising an eyebrow. "Do you think I'm not strong enough because I'm a girl?"
"Of course not," Alby was quick to reassure her. "We wouldn't want you getting hurt. So instead you will take trials for the safer jobs, safe, but just as helpful. then we will all gather together and decide which one you are assigned to. Understand?"
"Yep. Thanks alby" the girl said, smiling gratefully. But her smile soon dissipated. "Alby...why can't I go out into the maze? What's out there?"
Elsie had been told the very strictly implied rules she was to follow. No starting fights or being rude to fellow Gladers, no leaving the maze, ever, and so on. She didn't plan on breaking the rules.
"I will explain to you later. Now off you pop, Greenie" Alby said sternly. The girl decided not to push it, as Alby didn't seem like someone who would put up with any misbehavior or cheek.
The Girl sidled off, her fingers wrapped around the belt loops of her jeans. She stopped in the middle of the wide grass plain, staring down at her shoes. Her pink trainers were caked with dust, so were the cuffs of her jeans, and her long sleeved top was starting to smell rather funny. She worried that she was smelly.
She knew that their were showers. But she was too scared to brave them alone, especially in the center of a maze filled with boys.
"Hey Greenbean!"
The girl looked up and spotted Chuck coming up to her, a wide smile on his face.
"I want to have my own name back" the girl whispered. Chuck gave her a sympathetic smile, placing a hand on her shoulder. "It's alright Greenbean, you'll remember soon" Chuck reassured her. She gave him a half-hearted smile.
"Chuck, My mate, will you give me a little helping hand?"
-
"Are you done yet?" Chuck called to the girl over the running water of the shower.
Chuck stood guard infront of the shower stall the girl had claimed, the curtains drawn. He held the pile of her clothes and a clean towel in his arms as he waited for her to finish.
"Will you be patient! I need to wash my hair you Sap!" She yelled over the running water, shampooing her hair with the token bottle of shampoo Chuck had given to her.
"Are you done now?" Chuck yelled again a few minutes later. "You take an awfully long time to shower!"
The girl rolled her eyes and turned off the shower, watching as the final soap bubbles disappeared down the drain. "Close your eyes!" She demanded as she drew the curtain, carefully stepping out onto the bath mat.
Chuck kept his back to her, Keeping his eyes sealed tight as she snatched the towel from him, wrapping it around her body. "You'd better not have taken a look at my knickers!" She hissed at him as she took her clothes out of his arms, carefully sliding her underwear out of where she had hidden it in her Top.
